I think, or I hope, that Joe C. was trying to get a mascot for the little kids at the games. If he didn't get them solely for that purpose...I have some serious questions for Kenny Mossman.......geeeeez those things are ghey!

Every time I consider this...I end up thinking, 'that made about as much sense as Washington's NFL team having a John Wayne look alike mascot on their sidelines'.

'Sooners' is to 'Little Red' as 'Volunteers' is to 'Chieftain' :texan:

Yup...so the 2 major universities in the state with the largest per capita Indian population are 'Land of the Red Man Sooners' and 'Land of the Red Man Cowboys', whereas Illinois' (a state with almost no Indian population) major university selected an Indian tribe for its mascot :)

'Illinois' combo of Illini & French for 'tribe or band of men'
'Illini' from the Illini for 'man' or 'men'

Illinois Fighting Illini...Band of Men Fighting Men

I totally agree with Berry's caller who said it's got to be for the kids. He saw a bunch of 3-7 year old kids just entranced with the Horsepigs for the entire game.

From what experience I have with kids that age, expecting them to sit for 3.5 hours, no matter where you are, is usually unrealistic. Having something there that captivates them is probably a godsend for people who want/need to take their kids to games.

But I mean, is it really worth having a gay-***, embarrassing mascot?? Why do they have to be 'mascots' - we oughtta have a badass mascot AND the Horsepigs or something.

Circus clowns are captivating to kids too, but I'd rather not have them at our games either. Maybe just bring a book or anymore, a portable dvd or something? Can't stop people from having kids or bringing them to games, but that shouldn't force us to sissy up or mascot.

Do we need to retrain our Injuns in the art of procreation?

That's kinda tricky...I grew up in the 4 Corners and have a lot of family on the Navajo rez; we always thought AZ had to have that title :)

Turns out in in 90's, tribes around the country began lowering blood quantum qualifications--suddenly those that weren't recognized as Indian became Indian. The Cherokee pop. in OK went from being ~3/4 the Navajo's to practically the same. This practice, along with more Natives moving to urban areas, has caused shifts in populations per state. I'm sure seeking federal/state recognition as a tribe (motivated by casino/bingo business opportunities) has also motivated growth in tribal numbers as well.

I keep telling my (first?) wife...we need to bring back some of the old ways, like having more than one wife, for the sake of future generations :D

Why isn't the Schooner with real horses good enough for these children who must be entertained?

Maybe they could move the horsepigs and whatever mascot shows up from the other school to a petting zoo somewhere under the stands.

Admittedly, "petting zoo" may not be the best thing to call it.

I'm sick of hearing "they're for the kids."

Eff the kids!!! They don't pay for tickets.

Sorry...but the "Eff the Kids" comment is about the stupidest comment I have ever heard.....well other than TX has any chance of beating OU next year....HAHA!

I pay for our season tickets so they (kids) have as much right to be there as anyone else. Now, keep in mind if he is restless, etc I will take him down for a while to run around.

When I came to the games when I was a kid it made me fall in love with OU football. My little 3-year old loves to watch and say "Touchdown Oklahoma!!".

I know some of you might flame me for this.....but eh.:D

One more thing....just saw a note on someone stating that we should free up the seats for people who really want to be there.....almost as intelligent as the first post I mentioned above. If you want to be there.....pay to be there......dont gripe and whine about it.....pay to be there.

That is all.......

Despite all the side tangent bickering...those stupid things still need to go. Everytime I see those things during football games or Top Dawg during BB games, I hang my head. I understand the idea of horses for Boomer and Sooner and a dog for our first mascot, but no one really knows about the latter and the first ones just look silly on the sidelines.

I wonder how much longer Joe C is gonna get to coast off the Stoops hire. All he's done since then is pretty much systematically crap on the fanbase every chance he gets.

It's only a matter of time before we're banned from clapping at the games, because it makes the other team feel bad when OU scores and 84,000 people point it out...

Weren't the Illini a 'confederation' of multiple tribes that doesn't exactly exist anymore, hence why Illinois is getting a raw deal from the NCAA as compared to Florida State who can actually get 'approval' from the Florida Seminoles despite disapproval by the Oklahoma Seminoles?

I think they are talking about the playing the other team's fight song, not allowing over rowdiness at baseball games, the use of the television thing(went blank on it's name :P) during basketball games that kills the crowd momentum and doesn't allow the band to do their jobs.

Yeah, seeing as how the team is named after the people who snuck in early and took this land from the native peoples who were forced to relocate here in the first place, I don't see that a dancing caracature can be THAT much more hurtful. ;)

Three things I'm curious about:

1. Who's inside those costumes?

2. What costume designs were rejected in favor of the one that was selected?

3. At about what age does the average child realize that these are not real animals and how many children below that age attend games, whether paying for admission or not?

Just curious.

Some of the cheer/spirit people. I ran into one of them in New Orleans back before thegamenooneshallspeakofagainnumberone, and he decided to tell me about them for some reason, before they went public. He seemed really excited about it, apparently they were on the cutting edge of mascot technology at the time.

At football and basketball games now timeouts are filled with useless crap selling out to sponsors that totally kills any crowd involvement that might be going on at the time. Then there's playing the other team's fight song for them, prohibiting us from playing even something as innocuous as "Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys", taking any and all signs away from fans even if they're witty, funny, and clean of foul language, harping on the fans to "treat opposing teams with respect" rather than getting a good hate on for gameday, so on and so forth.

I would also be interested in seeing the giant Switzer head driving a wagon pulled by the horsepigs, either at a party or somewhere else.
