Pretty trees, but horribly prolific around here. Today and for the last few days there has been a veritable storm of elm seed pods blowing around my neighborhood. In a couple weeks we will be pulling up millions of baby elm trees. Gah!

Elm trees' droppings kinda look like tree ravioli. :mack:

Pretty trees, though. I prefer the allee and golden lacebark varieties. Beatiful and disease resistant.

I have some drake elms behind my house. Pretty decent little tree. Grows fast, makes good shade, does a really cool bark-shedding thing.

I've always hated those big trees that provide no shade.

I'm finding that I really don't know a whole lot about trees.

Do you have any idea how many seeds those trees produce, or how easy they sprout? I love the shade trees, but they catch in the cracks and crevices and grow....anywhere they land. The gutters on the streets are clotted with the things.

I used to raise apples and peaches in a commercial orchard, I hate trees now.

cedars are a scourge on the land. propagate like crazy, suck water from the land like a sponge, terrible for allergy sufferers. And the annoying fluff of the cottonwood clogs my A/C unit.

I thought Dutch Elm Disease killed all the elms in America. Who knew?

No kiddin'. They have just about ruined vistas of the Arbuckle Mtns which overlook the sacred environs of the Oklahoma town where I first saw the light of day. Scrub cedars are the cockroach of the tree world.

Helicopters are sycamore seeds, I believe. We had 2 at our last house.

And I thought all the fuzzies were cottonwood trees.

I have an elm I want to cut down. Cheapest estimate I got was $1200. And that was to just cut it down and I dispose of it. Yes, its a big tree.

They do get pretty big. There is a line of very tall Elms across the street from my house. Whenever we get a really bad storm or heavy snow, we find broken limbs lying everywhere. Does your Elm shed a multitude of seed pods all over your yard?

It used to. I think it has Dutch Elm Disease. Last year I cut one branch off and it filled an entire 12 foot trailer that has 5' tall sides.

I'd cut the whole thing down myself if it was out in the middle of the yard somewhere. It just happens to be right between my neighbor's house and mine.

It's amazing how far a lawn mower will fling these things, and how much they hurt if you step on one barefoot.

There are big branches hanging over both houses. It will have to be taken down a little at a time. Besides, you'd just charge me $1200 worth of beer. :D

Growing up, we used to have fights with those things when we got tired of throwing dirt clods at each other. The brown ones were all dried out and no good. But the green ones you could really sting somebody with.
