Thinking about new touring bike Honda goldwing or harley ultra classic. They cost about the same but Honda is clearly the better bike, but Harley is the accepted king of bikes because made in usa. Goldwing is to but is a jap brand I don't know if I should look cool or buy wise?

I'd go with the Honda.

Yeah, but if you don't get the Harley, then alot of the other bikers won't flash that cool little hand sign at you.

Test each of them and go with your gut feeling based on the test drive. I bet you choose the Honda.

IF you are the type who likes to tinker with motor vehicles, get the Harley. If, like me, you want a bike that will provide you with everything the Harley has, and more, other than the name and the headaches of minor ongoing maintenance, go with the Honda.

yeah, you'll need some maintenance repair classes if you go with a harley. i'd go with a honda as well.

If you want the pleasure of your buds and their admiration for your wheels, get the Harley Soft Tail or Road King.
I have a Suz 1400 Intruder and in my neighorhood there are 15 Harley owners.
"Yep, you can come to the bar and join us, we're gonna get there about 8, why dont you show up about 9."
"Oh, you're going to Daytona? Yeah, bunch of us are riding over together. Perhaps we'll see you there."

Hell's Burbys" = Harley snobs.
get used to it.

Actually, I wish I had bought the Harley. I so want to be part of someone's clique.
Thank goodness for SO and the Old Farts clique.

This thread is Dean-nip.

I thought that in the large touring bike circles, the Gold Wing was the accepted king.

I have an Intruder 1400 too. Love it and, if I were dead-set on a HD I would either still be waiting or have to give up much more. My knock on the 1400 is that it doesn't have the punch of my old Virago 920.

As for which bike to buy, purely taste and preference.

I had a Virago 920! That bike was awesome. The only problem I had with it was the LCD speedometer would freeze up in the winter. That v-twin + shaft drive was freaking awesome, imo. Incredibly smooth transfer of power.

Your 920 had more power than the 1400 Intruder????
Crap, mine rips my head off if I punch it.
how do they compare for hp?
Im probably gonna sell mine as I almost never ride it. It is a 97 and I have less than 1600 miles on it.

You can laugh all you want, but that little Vespa like machine pidtured above.... Im thinkin of buying one next year. My new workspace will be about 1 mile from my house and I find less need to be in a hurry nowdays. Can't you drive those without paying too much attention? Besides, I'd look all cute and stuff riding that machine. :D

Sonny Barger said Harleys are a POS and the only reason he rode one was because as an HA he had to. He said otherwise he would have a Triumph, BMW, or Husqvarna.

Virago 920 - 65 hp
Intruder 1400 - 60 hp

These links are as close as I could find. My bikes were both a year newer, '82 Virago and 2004 Intruder. That little Virago was full of suds I tell ya. Great engine.
