At the elite level, it seems that the more difficult schedules make the difference getting to BCS NC's. Also, admitting to this type of strategy can't help their case either.

Asserting independence
White: Irish returning to Rockne barnstorming era
Posted: Tuesday May 16, 2006 11:11AM; Updated: Tuesday May 16, 2006 11:45AM
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Notre Dame's decision to schedule a game each season at neutral sites starting in 2009 is an attempt to return the school to its independent roots, athletic director Kevin White said Tuesday.

White said the goal is to travel to different parts of the country and ensure that the only school with a national television contract remains a nationwide school. He said it would help with recruiting and give more Fighting Irish fans a chance to see the team play.

Division I football will go to a 12-game schedule for all schools beginning this season.

"I think over time we've really begun to behave like a wannabe conference member," White said. "I think it was real important for us to go back to our roots and behave more like an independent -- go back to the coach Rockne barnstorming era if you will."

The game is a sign that Notre Dame is moving further away from possibly affiliating with a conference, White said.

He said the games aren't truly neutral-site games, but home contests played away from South Bend. They will not be against what White described as "heavyweights."
"We have enough heavyweights on the schedule," he said. "We need to have a schedule that's conducive to success."

He said the university is negotiating to play in Jacksonville and Orlando, Fla., New Orleans and Dallas. The school is looking at existing bowl-game organizations to help stage the contests.

"It's really not a bad idea for Notre Dame to have relationships with lots of different entities," White said.

White, who has been inaccessible to the media in recent months, met informally with reporters for 90 minutes Tuesday to discus a wide range of issues, including upgrading university facilities, his decision to give football coach Charlie Weis a new 10-year contract and football scheduling.

Some Notre Dame fans have criticized the team's upcoming schedules, saying they are not as tough as they have been. White said he is not trying to put together the nation's most difficult schedule.

"We need to schedule in a way it puts us in a position to win national championships. We could have a great football team and schedule ourselves out of a championship. You can schedule yourself in, you can schedule yourself out," he said. "The last time I checked, the most important thing here is to try to win national championships. That's what we're trying to do."

Do you have to swear allegiance to the Pope to play for the Irish?

Do you have to swear allegiance to the Pope to play for the Irish?I'm sure a molestation record or a sexual predator tag will suffice. :D

"We need to schedule in a way it puts us in a position to win national championships."

wow...I'd be embarrassed if our athletic director said that.

I guess if the last time you tasted an NC was when Kirstie Alley was brand new to Cheers....its high time to schedule the cupcakes.

You know what, ND? You're already the golden children of the NCAA and the media can't wait to latch onto your pecker as soon as you win a game. Why not try winning all the games you schedule to get to a National Title game? I guarantee if you schedule nothing but East Popcorn State 12 times and beat them by a point each time in triple overtime the media will still clamor for you to be a National Title Contender.

This reeks of "We're not good enough to beat the big boys so we're going to schedule patsies and use our image and history to get into the Title Game."

THat pretty much says it all. It's laughable how open they are about scheduling easier games.

Notre Dame Whiny Bitches!

Their tougher schedule the last decade or so makes up for all the years of playing a bunch of cupcakes and having a 2 game season with Michigan and USC.

The Big East needs to sack up and refuse to have them in the conference for basketball and other sports until their football team joins a league and the Big 10 shouldn't play them in football either.

Notre Dame is officially nutless.

i think the Irish haven't won a bowl game since 1992 or something.

their schedule has been a paper tiger. USC was mediocre for a decade and Michigan is generally way overrated. Purdue and Michigan State and other middling Big 11 teams get hyped due to the Chicago media. and yearly tilts with Army and Navy......WHoa!

their problem is they've had 2 bad coaches in a row before Weiss, not the schedule.

absolutely. That clip was BS. Colorado got away with murder that year to win the National Title despite having lost AND tied a game. And McCartney turned out to be a SOB

OK, Colorado shouldn't have the MNC that they have. I can live with that.

Colorado is one of those teams that I wish didn't play football anymore. Like Southern Cal and Oklahoma State, they bring nothing but misery and annoyance to the collegiate atmosphere.

If you have a special clause to enter the BCS with 8 wins, why not guarantee 8 wins every year? This was predictable.
