You know, I actually remember the EXACT moment during your and gdc's conversation about that where I thought "Yeah, this is gonna be a thread tomorrow..."

mom' who skimped and brought Cragmont soda products for post-baseball/football/soccer games were sure enough to guarantee some unpleasantries for their son. everyone on the team would look at teammate x with a "cragmont?, wtf doooood..?" look.

Yep, and them cans was steel, not aluminum. And you needed a "churchkey" to open 'em too!

Maybe we could make this a History thread anyway by finding out where the term "Church Key" came from?

I expect it was a smart-arsed satiracal allusion to the fact they were most commonly used to open beer cans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_key
In Canada, the term churchkey is usually used as a mildly humorous euphemism. Saying "bottle opener" would announce one's intention to open a beer. A churchkey is often part of a key fob to further enhance its legitimacy.

I figured it was a Baptist that came up with it.

I dont remember That kind of cola but I do rememberr that type of pop bottle. In my neighborhood they were worth 7 cents.

Remember the pop machines where you opened the lid, put your quarter in the slot and got your Nehi by sliding it out through the maze like rows?

mmm.. Nehi, i remeber and old school machine kinda like that, but it was in someone's garage, there wasn't a maze, but there was a release or something that let you take the bottle out once you paid

i remember Cragmont stuff, although i don't really remember drinking it

the Safeway->Homeland switch was not good to my family...

Our grocery store had a drop off for your weekly returned pop bottles so you could get your deposit back when you checked out.

I have a very nice scar on my left pinky that starts at 1/2 between the tip and the 1st knuckle and goes to 1/2 way between the last knuckle and my hand ( where the finger attaches).

I remember it somewhat. I think I was 4 or 5 and I went over to the rack area and broke one of the bottles and when I tried to pick it up I slipped and about cut my finger off! My Dad said there was blood everywhere.

I could have paid for college if it had been a sue happy time in America.

Evidently then it was the kids fault for messing with the bottles.

I know it was negligence by Safeway. ;)

You know the statute of limitations on that personal injury claim was tolled until you turned 18 right? You might still be able to sue. Call Oldnslo. Quick man!

Yeah, that's what I said about the guy that wouldn't wear the rally cap last night.

****er.

What's funny is, you know that guy probably bitched about "those obnoxious *ssholes" while he was driving his bitch car back to his bitch house, where his "wife" strapped one on and pounded him like the little no-rally-cap-wearing bitch he is, and then forgot about it the next day.

Meanwhile, there's still five guys who are plotting to someday, somehow, give that guy the seven-iron beating that he deserves...:D

We always griped when cheapo parents would bring Cragmont (in a can, not a bottle) for the post-game treat. I was always adamant that my mom spend the extra $1 or so to get real cola.

How about "a burger, fries, coke and change from your dollar at McDonald's."
That was a line from one of their commercials.

I clearly remember the root beer in the conical containers. Searching ditches for pop bottles ($.035/ea) supplied me BB's & fishing tackle for a good portion of my childhood.

Name brand pops after soccer games were nice, but there was something to be said for the cooler full of Shasta, too. They had about a million flavors of the stuff.
