Mistletoe phoradendron serotinum the oldest of Oklahoma's symbols, adopted in 1893 -- 14 years before statehood. Mistletoe grows on trees throughout the state and is particularly bountiful in the southern regions of Oklahoma. The dark green leaves and white berries show up brightly during the fall and winter in trees that have shed their own leaves.

Mistletoe is not the state flower. Neither is cameltoe....that's the official state hillbilly female fashion statement.

When it comes to state flora, one must be careful to differentiate in Oklahoma. The Sooner State is represented, in one way or another, by three official flowers:

Official floral emblem - Mistletoe
Official state wild flower - Indian Blanket
Official state flower - Hybrid Tea Rose, "Oklahoma"
Mistletoe was adopted as the official floral emblem in 1893, while Oklahoma was still a territory. It was adopted by the State of Oklahoma in 1910.

Oklahoma also adopted the official state wild flower, the Indian blanket, in 1910.

It wasn't until 2004 that the "Oklahoma rose" joined the list

Note: you dont want to know where it was developed.

soonerbrat
5/4/2006, 11:12 PM
heh

i know it's some kind of hybrid...has an unusual number of petals or something

The Oklahoma rose is a hybrid tea rose [Rosa odorata (Andr.) Sweet] developed in 1964 by Herbert C. Swim and O.L. Weeks at Oklahoma State University. :eddie:

I know it's technically the state wildflower, but when I think Oklahoma and flower, gaillardia or Indian Blanket is what I think of.

SB is a horticulturist? I didn't know that.

Also interesting is the fact that Oklahoma is the 5th largest state producer of pecans in the country. Cool.

Yeah, I know, but only since 2004.

It took over from mistletoe, sending that to 'floral emblem' status.

Whatever that means.

And mistletoe is pretty much a weed that lives in trees.

We're some crazy muh fuhs! :texan:

What the crap is the Red Bud then?

I know its a tree but are the buds not flowers?

BigRedJed

I recently heard an explanation of the mistletoe thing (I think it was a Centennial promotional spot on TV) that said an early settler lost his wife, and the only plant he had to decorate her grave with was mistletoe. A state (or territorial) legislator neighbor of his agreed at his request to push for mistletoe in rememberence of the wife. Not sure if it's true, but interesesting if so.

Oklahoma Redbud is a flowering tree.

It's our official state tree.

Confusing, eh?

YMMSS....

Oklahoma History 'spek!

I remember that as kids we used to spend hours throwing rocks at mistletoe in the trees on my grandfather's farm near Okmulgee around Christmas time then try to sell it to the neighbors. We didn't have much success....just didn't understand the law of supply and demand.

The only other place I've seen a lot of mistletoe is between San Angelo and Junction in south central Texas.
