I've got this comprehensive book on painting. It simply documents the movements and most important painters throughout history.
the sobering part is most of them weren't appreciated during their lives, died poor and were later rediscovered to be innovative and brilliant. even many who made good coin and were successful ended up dying poor and distraught.
pretty encouraging.:D
