That's a lot of cash. He must not be very good at gambling to blow that much. Usually when I am bad at something, I go find something that I am good at to do.

I never thought I would say this, but this guy's a bigger bust than even Ryan freakin' Leaf. He's essentially a one-hit wonder, he parlayed one lucky major tournament win into stardom and got caught up in the too much too soon syndrome. His 15 minutes of fame should have expired a long time ago.
The guy's been a drunk, abusive to women and an essential embarassment to American sporting society. And yet people are still fascinated by this guy. It's like when people are still fascinated by the likes of Dennis Rodman, Terrell Owens and Ron Artest, they can't wait to hear what calamity will befall this guy next.
He's one reason I don't follow golf. And I never thought I would say this either but I would rather hear about Tiger Woods than this cad any day of the year.

Agreed, except that he has won 2 majors, including the British Open in 1995(?).

He recalled former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson telling him at a Tucson, Ariz., rehab center in 1993 that Daly would find something he loves as much as drinking and that he would have to be careful.

I was able to go to the 1995 Honda Classic to the celebrity tournament with a vendor sponsor, and we were actually on the course behind the players. As I recall, the players were Daly, Greg Norman, Fuzzy Zoeller, and I can't remember who the fourth player was. But they were paired up with Dan Marino, Bernie Kosar, John Schmoltz, and Greg Maddox. It was very casual and relaxed. The players were joking with each other. Fuzzy was paired up with Bernie Kosar, and every time Bernie hit an errant tee shot, it was like Comedy Central with Fuzzy's one liners.

I was talking to Hollywood Henderson and we introduced ourselves. He said "I'm Thomas Henderson." I said "Hollywood? Hollywood Henderson?" He said yeah, that's me, but I don't go by that name any more. Real nice, affable man. I aked him what he was doing at the golf tournament, and he said he'd been helping Daly, basically living with him night and day, to keep him straight.

Apparently, it didn't work.

Da-yum. 60 mill is a lot of dough.

I'm sure he's done his fair share of that too. That man's family that was struck by lightning and killed at Winged Foot(?) comes to mind.

yeah I know about that, he put the 2 daughters through college. very noble, especially for a nobody like him at the time.
I'm just sayin, 40 mill? he hasn't donated THAT much. except to the local gaming commission.

i'd liken it to the public's fascination to someone like billy martin rather than those mentioned. most people just plain hate TO, artest, etc because of their sorry attitudes on/off the field of play.

like martin, he's a lovable loser. no matter how bad he is in his personal life, people ignore it because he's fun to watch.

he also gave one of the best golf tips of all time re: putting when he said (something to the effect of) stand over the ball and hit it. the longer you stare down the putt, the more ways you'll think of to miss it...

No, you can't show a gambling "loss", but you can offset gambling winnings with gambling losses. Of course, nobody keeps records of losses and the big payoffs usually come with a 1099.

did you see his show on the golf channel when he made the talk show trip? was crazy. he did Leno, the Best Damn Sports Show and then flew to the east coast to do Letterman, Regis and what's her name, then I think Conan and then, gasp, cough, puke, Tony Danza. all in the span of a day or two.

it was cool to see him meet the Taylor Made reps and try out the new clubs, and new clothes and such. what a life those bastards have.

If he had put the money in the bank would that have been better? The only reason there is money is to spend it.Save and die without memories spend and die with memories is your only choice.

yeah, then there's the little question of spending more than you make.

owing money to paulie and vito may bring about unpleasant memories before death or even premature death.

spend some, save some. it's really not that hard.

Besides, we're talking about John Daly's gambling problem, not his personal "endowments"
