1stTimeMother would like me to get her a camcorder. She wants to spend no more than $400.

She doesn't get along well with technology so should I get her a Hi8 or get her a digital one? They have a prety sweet DLP tv that they will play the footage back on if that matters.

Any recommendations?

I have a Sony Digital 8 (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=Sony&level_d=Digital8.htm) that I bought to play and record old Hi 8 tapes onto DVD. It's been fine, no problems, you can find one for well under $400.

You can get virtually any MiniDV camcorder for that price and they are the next best thing to Mini DVD. The picture and sound quality may actually be better on a MiniDV tape than a MiniDVD. Highly recommended. Many also allow you to take digital still photos on a memory card (not as high quality as a dedicated digital camera though).

Check out this one - Panasonic PVGS65.

You can spend quite a bit more than $400 on a MiniDV camera if you want, but other than that I agree with Taxman.

I checked out the ones on Circuit City's website. Most are under $400. A few are big time and unnecessary for most normal people.

My Sony Mini DV was about $600-700 a couple of years ago. Quality is great, but the MiniDV files on my computer are huge (but better than DVD quality).

I'm hoping that my mom has a different use for hers than you do Martin, no offense.

I have a Hi8 camcorder and a Hi8 player/recorder (like a VCR). I like them, excellent video, but getting to be old technology.
