It hurts when your not invited to the NFL Combine, even though he did tremendous at OU's combine. The guy ran a 4.48 40. He's a frickin monster who will block the living hell out of anyone. Never took a play off, and a great leader. Some NFL team will realize it and he'll get drafted sometime or another today.

He'll be a free agent pick up, a career special teams guy in the NFL.

Not a damn thing wrong with that.

Good for JD. Surprising, but good.

i can't believe that Colorado's Lawrence Vickers went ahead of JD. Vickers was a good player and underused by Barney at CU--but he isn't innywhar near the player JD is. Vickers ran like 4.8 in front of scouts.

go get em JD!

how ironic. he's not a traditional fullback.I think the term should be throwback not traditional and yes heis that.Heblocks and catches the ball well.IF and it is a big IF Chicago gives him the chance to CARRY the ball he could be a Neal Anderson(Walter Payton running mate and later sucessor) type player who CAN do it all.

I wonder if he'll start getting playing time this year.

Too bad they will suck on offense with no QB.

Go Bears!

And the beautiful thing about JD is that he doesn't care about "being allowed" to do anything. All he cares about is doing his job and winning.

Which leads me to wonder what he thought about Kejuan's pre-draft hissy fit...:D

Bradley is only coming off of a torn ACL after being an early frontrunner for offensive rookie of the year last season.

pfftt.. is mark bradley still there? he was the leading receiver on the team when he went down. two games after his injury he still had more receptions and yardage than the number 3 and 4 receivers combined lol.

He is not a traditional fullback in any sense of the word... He only rushed twice for five yards in four years at OU. A traditional FB would have higher numbers than that. He is more a hybrid in the fact that when he was thrown to, he caught the ball in almost every situation. He has the hands of a reciever, but uses them as the concrete to block for his QB and open holes for his RB. In my honest opinion, he is the best in NCAA at the position and will be one of the best in the NFL. Not many players I can say that about... except if Jason White would have toughed it out...

like i mentioned in another post, he will be perfect for the bears. hard working kid from a blue collar family. good work ethics, modest etc. the bears are seriously lacking at the TE position and I made a bold prediction on chigobears.com and told the faithfull there that JD would be starting by october.

He played TE in high school also with 29 catches for 568 his senior year and 34 for 747 as a junior. He can play both positions and very well... they might have been thinking along those lines to???

I don't think they would play a 5'11 guy at TE in the NFL hybrid.

he should be an instant impact guy on special teams, and could develop into the H-back that alot of teams are wanting to implement in their offenses.

I don't see why they wouldnt. Give the fact that he can block better than most G/OT, I think that he would hold up extremely well on the line. Second, he can still produce holes to the running back on either side of the ball. He can catch the ball extremely well away from his body, he extends, doesnt catch close to him often.

after all that said... he would still be a much better if he plays FB full time, TE occasionally...

Receiving help in form of fullback

Receiving help in form of fullback

By John Mullin
Tribune staff reporter
Published May 1, 2006

The offense was expected to get help for the passing game in the form of a new tight end. Instead, the running game gets a boost from a lead blocker willing and able to take on linebackers and defensive ends. J.D. Runnels had just one carry in his final three seasons at Oklahoma, but he is a solid receiver out of the backfield, which is primarily how the Bears use their fullbacks.

The last fullback the Bears drafted was Jim Finn out of Penn in 1999. Finn is still in the league, just not with the Bears, and the hope always is that they can find a Roland Harper or Matt Suhey.

Quick facts: Height 5-11; Weight 238; 40 time 4.66.

Why a fullback? The Bears' offense features a tailback and a lead blocker. They expect their fullback to carry a heavy blocking load, and as good as Bryan Johnson and Jason McKie are, both were nicked up last year.

Why this fullback? Runnels was the lead blocker for star tailback Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma and the Bears want that kind of escort for Cedric Benson and, if he stays, Thomas Jones. Without adding a tight end in the draft, the Bears also could use additional receiving, and Runnels has superb hands.

Who's affected? Johnson and McKie are established on the depth chart, even with a bit of injury history, so Runnels has a difficult course to navigate. Barring injury to either of the veterans, the key for Runnels to make the roster will be what he can do on special teams.

Thinking out loud: "Oklahoma has been very good to us."--Lovie Smith, referring to recent draft picks Tommie Harris and Mark Bradley, plus Dusty Dvoracek and Runnels this year.

Footnotes: The last time the Bears drafted a fullback who made the team was Lakei Heimuli of BYU in 1987.
