Will Work For Food

Yeah, you hear stories all the time about people offering work to them in exchange for cash, but I've never heard of one accepting.

At best, it's a helluva hard way to make a buck. Panhandling that is. Regardless of their ambition, or lack thereof, I've never met a panhandler that wasn't in some sort of desperation. Sure, I've heard the stories of them refusing to work, the guy with who walks over to the Mercedes or Lexus at the end of the day of panhandling and drives home to his mansion, blah blah blah. If it makes you feel better to think that they are all degenerates who actually don't need food and can just eat cake then rock on with your bad self. Give 'em a buck, a coupon for a free burger, or drive on by in the comfortable knowledge that they are probably just looking for their next fix.

On the other hand, if they are looking for their next fix and you give them a buck, aren't you "enabling" them to continue in their addiction?

I see panhandlers all of the time downtown. There is a mission very close that will provide them a free meal and a place to stay. I always direct them there. I just don't feel that providing a dollar to them will save their lives when there is some place they can go nearby. Of course I was rather interested in the naked homeless couple that was having s** at the SW corner of Penn and Memorial the other day. It was rather interesting to be driving by and see that. I might have actually given them money for a hotel room.

I've said this before, DowtownOKC sold some coupons for free bus fare to one of the city shelters to encourage people to give them to the panhandlers instead of money. They didn't want anything to do with 'em.

The police and CSO's have done a nice job of handling the bum problem in downtown and bricktown. Once we get the bus station moved elsewhere, that will keep a lot of the fringe from bothering people and being a problem for workers and visitors.

Actually it was in the green belt on the north side of Memorial (east bound) but south side of Kilpatrick. Behind some trees.
