First-round draft analysis pick by pick By Pete Prisco
1. Houston selects: Mario Williams , DE, North Carolina State Grade C
They blew it. You cannot pass on a player with Reggie Bush's ability -- no matter what. Williams is a good player, but Bush is special.
2. New Orleans selects: Reggie Bush, RB, USC Grade A
He is the best player in this draft. How can you pass that up even with Deuce McAllister on the roster? The Saints did the right thng. They need to sell tickets, even if this isn't a need pick. A
3. Tennessee selects: Vince Young, QB, Texas Grade C-
They blew it. They picked the wrong quarterback. Vince Young is not ready to play. Matt Leinart would be. This will bite the franchise in the butt.
4. N.Y. Jets selects: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia Grade D-
This is the worst pick of the draft so far. How can this team, with no star quarterback, pass on Matt Leinart? It's unreal. He would have been a star in New York with Eli Manning. Ferguson is overrated. He's not the next Walter Jones.
5. Green Bay selects: A.J. Hawk, OLB, Ohio State Grade A
Hawk is the cleanest player in the draft, a guy who they can count on for 10 years. He will be a six-time Pro Bowl player.
6. San Francisco selects: Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland Grade A
I love this pick. He is a future star. They need to get playmakers for Alex Smith. This is a player who could be the next Antonio Gates -- plus some.
7. Oakland selects: Michael Huff, SS, Texas Grade B-
The Raiders will likely play him at safety, which might not be his best position. Does he tackle good enough? This is another team that should have taken Leinart.
8. Buffalo selects: Donte Whitner, SS, Ohio State Grade B-
They wanted a defensive playmaker and Whitner is a good one. But this is a little high for him. They must think J.P. Losman is the real deal.
9. Detroit selects: Ernie Sims, LB, , Florida State Grade B
He's a heck of a player, a guy who will be a star. But they passed up Leinart, which is shocking. This is a good pick, but Leinart would have been better. B
10. Arizona selects: Matt Leinart, QB, USC Grade A+
This is a terrific pick for this franchise. When Kurt Warner is done, they have a guy to build around. And they can be patient with him. A+
