View Full Version : How long until area codes...

...are meaningless to people? Because of mandatory ten-digit dialing and cell phones with "free" long distance, I predict that within 10-15 years the majority of the population will only have a vague idea that an area code isn't just a random set of three digits. I gave out an OU phone number to an OU student, and he wanted to make sure the area code was 405.... :stunned:

Area codes are the new "Kentucky Fried Chicken".

just in the greater detroit area we have 248, 313, 586, 734, and 810. That doesn't include the other 2 area codes (that I know of) in the state. I'm technically 'out of zone' calling my sister in law who lives about 12 miles from us.

area codes are meaningless here too.

we have:224,312,630,708,773,847 just in chicago and the surrounding burbs.

and 815 isn't all that far away either

nobody gives out a 7 digit phone number here.

I got so used to giving out the 10 digits while living in Phoenix that I still do it. Force of habit.

Lil Baja and her roommates use their cell phones in Norman. 972, 214, 918.

i remember when Collinsville and Owasso were long distance going from prefix 272 to 371 (both 918)

i wonder when home phones will move to no long distance like cell phones...

It used to be that all area codes had to have 0 or 1 as the middle digit. The huge number of cell phones has done away with this. One of the problems is that cell companys reserve and block off tens of thousands of numbers even if they never use them.

Our area codes consist of one for mainly Phoenix, one for the west valley, and one for the north and east valley. I'm actually closer to a big part of the Phoenix code than the eastern part of mine.

The fun part is when I call some neighbors and friends. Their home phone numbers are a different area code from their cell numbers.

So what I'm trying to say is: area codes. Pfft.

I am not sure what the JE stood for but I am guessing Jefferson. The central offices in OKC are Victor, Garfield, Mutual, Melrose, University, Parkview, Sunset, Skyline, Windsor, Central, Greenfield.

I remember when the entire state of Oklahoma was 405. It's them damn cell phones what's done it. When houses had one phone attached to the wall in the hallway like the good Lord intended, we only needed one area code.

Ardmore was CA3-Carter.

And even CA6 after that!

I knew area codes were getting cheap when even ArKinSaw got two.

Ardmore was CA3-Carter.

We were CA-3 1303. I think mom wrote that on the inside of my t-shirts when I was a little tow-headed kid who walked a mile to school in first grade. Northwest Elementary by gawd. Its closed now.:(

The 77 North Drive-In across the street from Northwest was the best drive-in of the two in Ardmore.

We lived close enough (to the north) that my baby sister used to sit in our swing set and watch the movies they showed...no sound, but she thought it was cool because we didn't have color TV.:D

912 "O" St NW, Ardmore, America. I bet its a crack house now...or at least a meth lab.
