My parents used to talk about Joe Don. Too bad there was not the degree of TV coverage in the 60s that we have today. That is expecially true if you had a player like a Looney or Pete Maravich while at LSU in basketball.

Joe Don's story has to be one of the saddest ever from the standpoint of wasted potential.

I'm sure I read Doug Looney's story years ago but I don't remember getting the impression from it then that I do now that Joe Doe really didn't want to play football. And problably didn't want to do much of anything according to society's conventions.

I also recall another episode in which Joe Don and some friends were implicated in some kind of illicit sale/purchase of automatic weapons in the New Orleans area. This was shortly after the Saints had cut him loose and before he went to India to nursemaid elephants for the guru.

he went to a sorority house to pick up his date, a spectacular blonde widely considered to be the prettiest around. He arrived at 7 p.m., the appointed hour. By 7:02, she had not come dowmstairs. He left a note: "Joe Don waits for no one." That story made quick time around Norman.

heh

Had Joe Don not been crazy and Marcus Dupree a bit lazy they might have dominated beyond their limited times here. Too bad.

Joe Don was my father's favorite Sooner football player of all time.

His description sounds like AD, but insane. Thank God, AD seems like such a great guy and team member.
