View Full Version : Anyone familiar with San Diego?

The San Diego Symphony invited me to audition for their principal trombone job (about a $60,000 a year gig). I'm trying to find a hotel somewhere it'll be easy to get to the orchestra hall that doesn't cost $300 per night.

I HATE flying into San Diego. I always feel like I am going to end up on someone rooftop.
My grandparents lived on Mission Bay, with rental property on the beach.
My husband's uncle lived on Point Loma.
They are all gone or I could ask them....

Good luck. When is the audition? And I have a trombone with a trigger in the closet somewhere - want to borrow it? ;)

There is a Days Inn on the corner of (if I remember right) Ash & 9th Ave.

Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done and it is caddycorner to the symphony.

I went there a couple times. Mission Beach is nice...very clean. I got sand in places sand doesn't belong though. :D

The audition is May 24th. And Baja, I'll call you if anything happens to my horn. ;)

It was discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

i'm pretty sure it means Saint Diego

we stayed in La Jolla, but i think the regular rate at that Marriott was pretty 'spensive

GHP--my roommate is from San Diego. If you come out, i'll drive down fom L.A. to visit. It might be possible to arrange a place for you to stay at least one night, to save some money. I'll bring my roommate along as well, i think he might know people in the symphony.

There are a couple of hostels in the Gaslamp district if'n that would be an option.

Not too far from the symphony, either.

That would rock. I would be flying out probably midday on the 23rd, and flying back about 5:00 on the 25th. Let me know.

I figure I'll ask for an audition spot right after lunch. Then if I get tossed out on my ear I can go hit the zoo, or Sea World, or some other place that will make PG mad. ;)

No kidding! Try the Ontario airport. It's in Riverside County, and you will have to arrange transportation to San Diego proper, but it's a much more pleasant airport to use. My wife and I live in Fallbrook, which is about as far north as you can go in San Diego County. For that reason we always go up to Ontario when we fly.

1. the La Jolla Empress is probably too expensive

2. not so. just 10 min up the highway. it's a cool place if you enjoy watching waves crash into cliffs and rocks. they've got harbor seals too

3. Watched the Mets/Padres last Thursday - nice new park

4. no trannys

5. cool zoo too.

OK, so I booked my flight. Awesome.

The e-mail they sent was a bit unusual. In that they asked for more than just a "yes I'm coming to audition" response. They asked when I'm arriving, where I'm staying, contact phone number they can reach me at while I'm out there, what my preferred audition time is, and so on.

some of that I could attribute to thoroughness, but asking when I prefer to audition? I have NEVER been asked that before and they will be my ninth professional audition. I mean, that's the sort of thing you ask one of your big time candidates, not some dude who's never had a pro gig before. Wacky.

Permission to come aboard?

Didn't think this kind of thread would be my first posting, but I talk too much. LOL

Here's a Frommer's link to SD Symphony:
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/sandiego/N28462.html

Dunno if you are interested in staying close by the symphony or close to the airport, but if you want cheap and clean, there's a HoJo and a Day's Inn on Rosecrans, right close to the airport. Many of us Marine parents stay either place when we visit the Depot (MCRD) for our Marine Recruit Graduation. About $70 a night, usually. Anything in the Gas Lamp district will cost way too much.

Good luck out there.

Hey, when you land, you should be able to see the Recruit Depot where Hollywood Marines are made. Look out the right side windows - you can see the rappelling tower, the barracks, etc. Too cool. Seeing the yellow stucco of the Depot makes my heart as proud as seeing Owen Field. Well, truth be told, the Depot's even better...not an easy accomplishment, but my sons' Corps is the best thing the USA has. Sooner football is second!

(BTW, usmcsooner...the training time is still about thirteen weeks. I know it was indeed shorter during 'Nam)

Told ya I talk too much. *snort*
