View Full Version : $3 a gallon doesn't seem to bother some people

Like the three or four people I have encountered the last couple of days in Yukons, Escalades, etc. that are driving like they are running 15 minutes late to an interview. Maybe they really are late to something important. I sure hope they don't drive like that all of the time. I can't think that putting $75 - $100 into the truck each week is fun.

It's just ridiculous that I have to pay almost $100 to fill up my tank.

No, it's ridiculous that you bought a vehicle that you really didn't need that gets 12 MPG and now you're complaining about fuel costs.

Every night for the last week they have had stories on the news about people pawning their stuff just so they can get gas to get back and forth to work...

That's usually furthest from the truth. There are so many people up here trying to keep up with the Jones' - 2MM dollar house- 80K cars, they are in hock up to their eyeballls. I know a mortgage dude and he says that there are a ****load of people behind on their payments. my car gets close to 30mpg and i still pay about $100/week to drive. If my ex husband hadn't volunteered to take over the driving responsibilities for the kids, i'd have to take them out of their respective schools and let them ride the bus (my son goes to a private school on the other side of town and my daughter goes to a school in my mom's district)

You guys might find this little site interesting..it's the Gas-Buddy.com "Heat" map, which shows gas prices in the US graphically by county (and by zip code if you zoom in).

http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

Glad to see there's still about a .10 difference between Raleigh, NC and Norman, OK...with a storm chasing trip coming in a few weeks. We have forumulated our budget for $3.05/gal for gas during the trip, and I am sure glad it's being split 4 ways.

We had a Suburban until January. My wife got tired of not being able to put it in the garage and my step-kids are getting old enough that they don't go many places with us anymore. Problem is, a paid-off Suburban still doesn't use enough gas to off-set a new car payment (even though that's what we did). The new SUV's don't fall into this category, but it's exactly what I was thinking when we (my wife) decided to get rid of the old 'Burban.

These impacts are not without cause. On average, every new large SUV cruising the streets produces 60 percent more climate-threatening carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than a new car.

Good point. I wonder what percentage of home-'owners' have interest-only loans and how that compares to the percentage of traders that were buying on margin back in '29. Fortunately, real-estate, even though its value will probably drop sometime, won't become completely valueless as some stocks did then.

Actually, the people I hear griping the most are mid range car owners. Cars that get in the 20s mpg.

I rarely, if ever, hear of SUV drivers complaining. They pretty much know what they're getting into when they buy them.

Most of these people--especially the women--would drive a lot more conservatively in a smaller vehicle. Drving an SUV gives a lot of people an invincibility complex, which is doubly dangerous because you need to be even more careful when driving one due to their larger size, higher CG, etc.

In fact, I don't ever recall a Tahoe or equivelant cutting in and out of traffic.

The sense of security is there, though. You have a sense that when some moron cuts in front of you and you drive over thier vehicle, you won't be hurt too bad.

Of course, every SUV driver doesn't drive perfectly and every small car driver is not an idiot. But the majority of the idiot drivers are in small cars. I notice this because I watch for it. It bugs the crap out of me.

Okay, apparently you were taking my comments a little too literally. ;) All I was trying to say was that the U.S. is way way ahead of nearly the entire planet when it comes to pollution control measures. We've even had declared dead rivers and lakes come back to life in the last couple of decades.
