I just stumbled upon this album which had been hiding away in the back of one of my desk drawers for years now. Back when I got all those cds stolen out of my car, it was one of about 10 or 20 that I had in the trunk, ready to take to CD Zone or some cd trader place. Never got around to it and after the theft, figured I'd go ahead and hang on to what cds I still had. This one and Fashion Nugget by Cake are at the head of the class.

At any rate, I forgot how much I liked this album. I'll probably pop in the Cake one here in a little while.

I listened to some Pumpkins in the car today. Good stuff. From their website:

it's official, The Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 2000. no release date has yet been set, but the band plans to begin recording this summer.

I'm trying to be optimistic about that, but I dunno...

I just hope it's all original members or at least with James.

We'd also like to say that Billy Corgan is still an overinflated ego with the brain of a matchbox car.

your optimism is wasted sir.

My suitemate during my freshman year introduced me to the SP. I mean, I'd heard of them before then, but until he made me listen to the album, my general reaction to the SP was similar to this kid's:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39339000/jpg/_39339680_rings300pa.jpg

But they grew on me fast. After freshman year I had to go buy MC&theIS and a few of their others.

Corgan and his ego were there from the beginning, so that doesn't bother me. It's just that bands that break up for several years are rarely successful the 2nd time around. It can happen, but it isn't likely. I've got as much hope for a new Pumpkins album being any good as I have for the (allegedly) forthcoming GNR album being any good.

that's the rumor. dunno if it's true, but it really has no bearing on the (alleged) new GNR album. there were never any plans to bring him or duff back in to GNR. although there is talk of serious turmoil within Velvet Revolver, which has caused some GNR reunion rumors to pop up on the message boards.

I think you misunderstood. I was well aware that the "new" incarnation of GNR is allegedly recording an album and defintely planning to tour. When I said "GNR reunion" I meant any of the original members aside from axl being involved.

I thought about that but wasn't sure. Yeah, I highly doubt you will ever see the original line up ever again. I don't even think Buckethead is in the lineup anymore.

Pisces had some really good songs, but no thread running through it as it was all b-sides etc- a compilation. Gish rawked, Siamese Dream rawked, MC&tIS rawked, Adore not so much, Machinas was pretty damn good and Machinas II was really good.

See, since I didn't start following them until MCIS I didn't really pay attention to what order their albums came out. I always thought (until I read your post) that Gish came out before Siamese Dream based strictly on cover art.

This looks like cover art from 1993

This looks like cover art from the 80's

And that's why I didn't bother to listen to Gish. If I'd've known it was the follow-up to SD, I probably would've.

Gish was the debut album. I think he was referring to greatness of albums.
Agreed, Gish looks very much like the work of the Nothing's Shocking album art designer..

I'm listening to SD right now and it still R'sMMF'ingFO!!
It's an excellent album all the way through. It's not one of those typical popular albums these days that you have skip songs 4, 6, 9, 11... It plays great.

Of course, his highness of the early nineties, Butch Vig co-produced it with Billy. It also emphasizes that the early 90's were a great time for music. That period gets too pigeonholed as grunge, but grunge was just a part of it-
Grunge - Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, Alice
Manchester - Charlatans, Blur, EMF (to a lesser extent), Happy Mondays
Industrial/Metal- Tool, NIN
Rap - Ice Cube, Dre and Snoop, Naughty By Nature, Onyx
Alt- Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr., Porno For Pyros/Jane's, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Paul Westerberg/Replacements, Pixies, and the people that made alt corporate and viable - RHCP

Great fuggin music for those times

Oh, well I wondered if that might've been what you did, but when I was looking on amazon for the cover art, I came across these dates:

Gish: Audio CD (October 4, 1994)
SD: Audio CD (July 27, 1993)

Which I assumed were release dates but apparently are not.

At any rate, I plan on checkin me out some Gish.

"1979" is one of the best videos of the decade....

Teenagers on a weekend night at a party, TPing a yard, skinny dipping, bowling w/ beer bottles in a convenient store

Sometimes I really miss the 90s ;)
