In the interest of bringing quaint remembrances of beautiful living to my hillbilly peeps, and the laughs which accompany looking at the way polite folks were expected to behave "back in the day" I shall endeavour to bring you gems from Mrs. Post from time to time.

Today's installment:

DON'T ATTRACT ATTENTION

"Nothing stamps the vulgarian more plainly than advertising his possessions or achievements by loud word of mouth - whether in public or not!

Not to attract attention to oneself in public is one of the fundamental rules of good breeding. Shun the loud voice, staring at people, bumping into them, talking across anyone, and do not expose your private affairs, feelings or innermost thoughts in public.

The most important rule of behavior in the street is to do nothing that is conspicuous.":texan:

"Etiquette, The Blue Book of Social Usage," by Emily Post, Funk & Wagnals Co. (NY, 1955), p. 52.
