What should I have done in this situation?

Today I was shopping for supplies at Lowes and sought assistance from a sales clerk.

I already had some tomatoes in my basket and the dude helping me takes his thumb and index finger, gently placing them around the tomato and starts moving along the plant. Then he puts his hand to his nose and gives with a big sniff. :eek: I'm not lying, you people. Then the dude says, "I really like tomatoes". I just sorta looked funny and turned attention back to my quest for building materials.

I thought that was very strange and I felt like telling the guy he is a freakazoid. But I didn't want to be rude. What should I have done?
