View Full Version : SI's biggest draft busts

Sports Illustrated does it again...it shows once again that it is a worthless POS when it comes to sports discusssions.
Listing the Boz as the biggest bust in the "modern era" is a joke, there are picks that were far worse. The Boz was a bust in the NFL, but for him to be #1 out of 23 is just plain stupid...Ryan Leaf gets my vote

I think putting someone on there that had injury problems is really ****ing wrong. Boz, Emtman got screwed. Leaf should be no. 1, followed by Akili Smith, and Curtis Enis. Oh yeah, Mandarich was on there, but didn't he sort of turn it around for a couple of years?

william_brasky
4/21/2006, 07:32 AM
Leaf should be 1 or 2. No question. They have him at 19. Wow.

I would say a series of mental brain farts makes for a bigger bust.

So is Harrington cut from the Lions? I hadn't heard that...

I would definitely agree that Ryan Leaf is #1. He's been the staple boy for draft busts for a couple of years now, and SI has him at #19.

However, after reading this about the stupid Green Bay Packers taking a lineman over these guys, I might have to reconsider.
"Mandarich played three seasons in Green Bay and seven total in the NFL. The next three picks in '89? Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders." Ouch!

BTW, you gotta love #16. ;)

I think the fact that Boz got over on the NFL might have gave him some special attention.

He KNEW he was injured before he was drafted and played it for all he could get so he could further his acting and business opportunities.

Yeah......injuries are an excuse for him to not be on the list, but the way he played the system is a good reason for him to be on the list.

Leaf should be number 1 though.

I would say a series of mental brain farts makes for a bigger bust.

Excellent points. Injuries can happen to anybody, regardless of their talent level. People who are physically healthy but just can't perform is what I would call a bust. Morans...

Nice to see Trev on that list; amazing how many QB's are on there.

Leaf, Mandarich, Heath Shuler, Gino Toretta, Andre Ware, Rasham Salaam,

at least Boz was a productive player and played although it was a short lived career.

don't forget Rick Mirer and that RB from Penn State who played with Kerry horse head Collins. Kijana Cater or something like that.

yes but I thought he did so after sucking for an entire year first.

I can't find the numbers anymore, but Bosworth averaged like 10 tackles a game during his short NFL career, hardly a bust. A bust to me means you just can't play at that level. If healthy, Bosworth would have been a star.

He blew his knew out before playing in any games.

I would make a case for Tim Couch. Number 1 overall pick and has never made a pro bowl. Not number one bust but definetly not a solid way to use a #1.

By the way, the pictures are in order of the year they were drafted. Everyone who jumped to the conclusion that SI hates OU is acting like a Puke.

EDIT: This is from last year before the draft and Harrington has been added in because he was recently cut.

Scott D

Harrington hasn't been cut yet guys. He's only worked out a deal with the Dolphins, but needs the Lions to either cut/waive/trade him before he can sign it.

He also has the right to refuse a trade in his contract. He came out and said basically that he was a Dolphin killing any trade hope the Lions had. Right now Miami is offering a 6th for him or he will get cut in a few weeks when his bonus is due.

Leaf has to be hands down the #1 bust in NFL history. Boz is not even in the same league as Leaf as far as busts go nor is anyone else for that matter.

4/21/2006, 01:25 PM
Akili Smith, Leaf, Sammie Davis, Mandrich, Marinovich, Klingler, Blair Thomas, Mirer, Shuler, Kijana, Lawrence Philips, Emtman were all much bigger busts. Also, isn't Boz one of the only ones on that list that was taken in the supplemental draft???

4/21/2006, 01:25 PM

4/21/2006, 03:25 PM
Ok first of all a bust cant be a bust due to injuries....2nd..He was in the supplemental draft not the regular draft.....Ryan Leaf has to be the bigger bust because they didnt get anything at all from him.....
Tony Mandarich, imo, has to be a top 3..Quentin Coryatt was terrible...Klingler....Mirer.....People love to hate the Boz tho but he fed off of that...It made him rich...

Boz was never even given a chance to succeed. The local media worked up the fans against him over the amount of his contract, the organization never even tried to get behind him, nor did they make any allowance for his injury. They deserved to get played and I hope most of the people in the NW are still ****ed off enough to lose some sleep or something over it.

Blair Thomas, Kajana Carter (1st overall pick), and Curtis "Penis" Enis...PSU..I smell a Flop U. Leaf, Cade McCown, Akili Smith were all 1st rounders from the same draft. Only McNabb remains from that 1st round class.
My biggest disappointment would have to be Kijana Carter. I thought this guy was the truth coming out of PSU. Boy he had some bad luck with those knees.

Pickens from Nebraska should always show up on draft bust lists. Croel should be up there to, but he had at least one decent year.
