with that son of a b*tch drunk sutton rating on us, I was wondering about what happened to Oklahoma football in the 80s? Not sure what happened, but would like to know. Anyone have a good link ? Was it Royal ?

DKR retired after the '76 season I think it was.

If you read "Bootlegger's Boy", you'll hear about how DKR whined and moaned about the restrictions the Southwest conference had on visits to recruits, number of recruiters, etc. In response to Switzers comment, "Some people don't want to work. They would rather sit around and listen to guitar pickers." Royal said, "We're not being outworked, we're being outnumbered!"

In the '80's is was the recruiting of Hart Lee Dykes that got OU and a few others in trouble. Again in "Bootlegger's Boy", Switzer wrote that everybody knew that Dykes was gonna milk the recruiting process for what he could and he told his recruiters to stay away from Dykes or to at least be VERY, VERY careful in their communications. Some assistant, Scott Hill maybe? failed to do so.

Not sure about that, but a BIG reason for our 80's probation was they were bitter that we sued them and won. Oddly enough, Georgia was the other party in the lawsuit...and they got probation, too.

Notre Dame wouldn't risk their pristine image by joining us in the lawsuit, but they WERE the first to rush out and take advantage of the fact we won.

Daily Texan rant: 10/03

So Sooners, you guys must be feeling pretty good right now. You're the No. 1 team in the land, are gunning for a fourth straight victory over our Longhorns and have a quarterback who's mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate.

We promise to wipe that toothless, tobacco-stained grin off your face Saturday in Dallas.

Oh, sure, on the surface this game means everything to us. If we win, we'll celebrate like former OU linebacker Brain Bosworth did after he miraculously passed a drug test during his playing days. And if we lose, we'll mourn like OU fans did when a 1989 Sports Illustrated cover read "Oklahoma: A Sordid Story. How Barry Switzer's Sooners Terrorized Their Campus."

By the way, the same magazine named Texas the No. 1 sports school last fall.

But enough about sports ... for now.

While the Red River Rivalry goes in streaks, Texas has dominated Oklahoma ever since it was admitted to the Union in 1907 - and what a mistake that was. If the dust bowl you guys call a state ever produces anything of worth besides wheat and cattle, let us know. For now, we're content with being the live music capital of the world. If that's not enough, there's a few other areas where Texas takes the cake.

If Texas were to secede, it would have the eighth largest GDP in the world. Oklahoma ranks 44th in per capita personal income by state.

Four Presidents were born or lived in Texas (Eisenhower, LBJ, Bush I and Bush II). The United States is more likely to elect someone from Austria as president than, God forbid, an Oklahoman.

Texas history contains stories of the bravery and courage exemplified by men like Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. Oklahoma history begins with how men sacrificed their honor to steal some land.

In addition, Austin is home to many stars - Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger. How many movie stars are looking to buy property in Norman, Okla?

No amount of nipping or tucking will stop Oklahomans from looking like something Bevo just dropped. Your only aid is some of that weak 3.2 percent beer to help you get through those nights cuddling with Billy Sue, or is it Billy Bob?

By the way, what in the world are native Texans doing at OU? Norman over Austin, what were you thinking? Oh, wait, we know, you couldn't get into Texas.

We realize Oklahoma seniors have enjoyed three straight wins over our Longhorns, and that's probably taken a bit of the sting out of the rejection letter. However, there's no way the Sooners are going to celebrate a fourth straight victory Saturday. Our Horns are out for revenge, and we're betting they'll get it. But no matter what happens, the diploma in your office will always read University of Oklahoma and ours the University of Texas. Sucks for you.

Hook 'em.

(As you recall, we won 65-13 that year)

Was it Kerry Woods?

I thought it was Kerry Jackson. If I remember correctly, it had something to do with a doctored HS transcript.

Kerry Jackson was declared ineligible when it was determined that his HS transcript had been altered prior to being submitted to the admissions office at OU. This was announced on Monday before the Texas game and OU was forced to go with an untried wishbone QB. The replacement was interviewed on the evening sports and said how he understood that the OU fans might be worried and all but he thought they should chill out because he knew OU would be fine with Thomas Lott. He was right.
Smart money says that because OU and Georgia had successfully sued the NCAA, they were put on a hit list. A bounty on their heads so to speak. Didn't take long for people to line up to claim the bounty. There is little evidence that DKR was one of those. He probably had some Texas state rep do his bidding.
Hart Lee Dykes was the Typhoid Mary of college football. His recruiting resulted in 5 schools being sanctioned in some form.

Kerry Jackson was the reason we were put on probation after the '72 season, but Thomas Lott didn't come along until Dean Blevins was unable to start the '76 Texas game. Steve Davis was the QB that took over after Jackson was ruled ineligible, he started the next three seasons.

The National College Football Coaches Association is a big time fraternity. Darrell Royal was (and remains) one of the most widely respected coaches among the frat....not only did Switzer never lose to him but he also threw it in his face...in public. Royal hated him and, from the start, other people shaped Switzer's national public persona more than he did himself (This antimosity among his peers is easily demonstrated by the laughauble time it took for Barry to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame).

It's not publicly known if DKR "ratted us out" but it wouldn't surprise me (whats more likely is that UT boosters in the know outed us).

But still, ask Alabama....your rival is ALWAYS looking for an excuse to destroy you...you can't give them the rope to do it. Barry was a great coach and, overall, (IMO) a good man....but he ran a loose ship. He gave enough rope to others to hang him w/...and our program was ruined. Whether it was OSU or Texas boosters, DKR, or anyone else...ulimately the players (and program) under Switz really did get outta control. I wouldn't put it past DKR to want to ruin Switzer but in the end...Switzer allowed his enemies (IMO his worst enemy was ultimately a scandal hungry media) the sufficient ammo.

which is pretty funny since his first coaching job ever he got busted for having a slush fund.

the thing about jackson is that royal wanted him worse than we did. it was truly a win/win situation for him as the doctored transcript would have never came out if he had landed him...

Don't forget the spy game in 1976.

The '76 game dripped with drama. OU under Chuck Fairbanks and Barry Switzer had beaten Texas five straight after copying, at Switzer's suggestion to Fairbanks, the new (1968) wishbone formation that Royal used in his last victory over OU, 41-9, in 1970. Worse, Royal accused Switzer of spying on UT practices and offered $10,000 each to Switzer, defensive coordinator Larry Lacewell and the spy he named, Lonnie Williams, if they would take polygraph tests. Turned down and also ridiculed by Switzer, Royal, in an AP interview with me, called the OU coaches "sorry bastards," a phrase Okie fans chanted outside Royal's hotel room the night before the game.
