not as far as I know. They're pretty frequent visitors around my parents house, and that's in the middle of the suburbs. I would imagine that they're all over the place if you get out of town.

Get sunflower seeds and millet. Buy a bag of each at the feed store. HOWEVER, you will need to figure out how to squirrel proof your feeder.
And no, that Redheaded woodpecker you saw is not that unusual.

nah--for a woodpecker, just buy a suet block. They hang in little wire cages. squirrels can still get to them if they want, but if you put some food on the ground for them, they won't bother it.

and yes, red-headed woodpeckers are very common. there are big versions (size of a blue jay or so) and small versions (about six inches tall) and all sorts of others.

I see em' nearly every day on the Deanerosa.

But I'll be damned if I'm gonna feed the noisy little rascals. And squirrels? Feeding them would = baiting them - cause the only good squirrel is a dead squirrel in the cast iron skillet. Squirrels is good eatin'.

Were you sober today?
That might explain why you just noticed such a common pecker.

I always preferred the "sociopath" Woody of the early 1940's to the "smart-a$$" Woody of the 50's and 60's.

It sounds like a pileated woodpecker. I'm not sure how rare they are in Oklahoma, but my in-laws(avid bird watchers here in Utah) were extremely excited as we came upon one in March over there in Oklahoma.

There is a light pole on the corner of my yard (I have a corner lot) and on it, people put lost/found flyers sometimes. Yesterday I noticed there was a new one......it was a FOUND flyer for a parrot. There's something you don't see every day.

I thought this fit right nice in the bird thread.

'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!
