Tomorrow, my grandmother will turn 94. She's been around to see a lot
over the years, but two events that took place on her birthday are forever
sketched into our minds:

1) 1993 - The Branch Davidians

The Branch Davidians are a religious group originating from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. From its inception, the group inherited Adventism's apocalypticism, in that they believed themselves to be living in a time when Christian prophecies of a final divine judgment were coming to pass. They are best known for the 1993 siege of their Mount Carmel Center near Waco, Texas, by the FBI and the BATF, which resulted in the deaths of eighty-two of the church's members, including head figure David Koresh. However, by the time of the siege, Koresh had encouraged his followers to think of themselves as "students of the Seven Seals" rather than Branch Davidians, while other Branch Davidian factions never accepted his leadership. (from Wikipedia)

2) 1995 - The Murrah Building attacked

The Oklahoma City bombing was a terrorist attack on April 19, 1995, in which the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, a U.S. government office complex in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was destroyed, killing 168 people. It is the largest domestic terrorist attack in the history of the United States and was the largest act of terrorism within U.S. borders until September 11, 2001. (from Wikipedia)

Other noteworthy events that have taken place on Granny's birthday that she's been around to see:

1919 - Leslie Irvin of the United States makes the first successful parachute jump and free-fall.

1927 - Mae West is sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity for her play Sex.

1934 - Shirley Temple debuts in Stand Up and Cheer.

1938 - RCA–NBC begins regular television broadcasts.

1951 - General Douglas MacArthur retires from the military.

1961 - The Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba ends in failure.

1971 - Charles Manson is sentenced to life in prison for the Sharon Tate murders.

1989 - A gun turret explodes on the USS Iowa, killing 47 sailors.

2000 - An Air Philippines Boeing 737-200 crashes near Davao International Airport, killing 131.

2005 - Joseph Ratzinger elected Pope Benedict XVI on the second day of the Papal conclave.

Other people born on the same day:

1968 - Ashley Judd (YEAH BABY!)

1979 - Kate Hudson

It is also the day my first daughter crawled for the first time. On the day of the OKC bombing.

When I go back and watch the video now you can hear all the new coverage in the background. Kind of freaky.

She'll get a gentle one, she's is a bit frail these days, but hanging in there.

It was also the day "the shot was fired heard 'round the world" -- aka Battle of Lexington. April 10, 1775: Opening dance of the Revolutionary War

It's great there. It hasn't changed so much that's it's difficult to picture what the day must have been like.
