We took off headed south, and then turned west, which allowed me
to see the entire coast from the sky for the first time since Katrina.

It's still beyond comprehension. Massive areas of total destruction,
continuous miles and miles of devastation. Still a lot of blue roofs
even though 50,000 messicans are working their azzez off putting
new roofs on every day.

Seeing everything on the ground, and now from the air, it's just heartbreaking.

You should see it in WorldWind with the NOAA remote sensing imagery layer turned on.

Go here for WorldWind (http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/index.html)

Go here for the NOAA/USACE Katrina add-on (http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Add-on:Katrina_Data_Add-On)

Shortly after the storm, I took a team of forensic engineers to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to measure storm surge and do damage assessments. I've been back several times since, and I still can't believe the amount of damage, or the amount of debris that's still there.

In the WorldWind / NOAA imagery, you can see a wrack line that is a quarter mile wide in some places.
