I think he's lucky, but I also think having the right equipment

You're looking for something to pick at here. The young Marine himself said that if he'd bought a lottery ticket, he'd have won. I think the word is quite appropriate in the situation.

actually I'm not looking for anything. just my initial reaction.
and that comment by the Marine helps a bit.
