I gave up alcohol. I can't begin to tell you how unfunny you people are whilst I am sober.

Got me some libations so I can spend Easter Sunday plowed.

I think I'm going to keep my Lent pledge going for a while. I vowed to exercise at least 45 minutes every day. Missed one day out of it to drive 10 hours to my mom's funeral, but I hope God understands. With the added exercise, I've gone down 2 notches on my belt. Didn't change anything but the laziness.

Don't knock it till you tried it...

I bet Johnny's report on his 1st beer in 40 days will be pretty good and probably worth waiting for...

again, I ask: what's the point of giving up something if you're going to immediately un-give it up as soon as the 40 days is over?

I gave up fast food and soda.

I'm not really craving either.

I might get a Dr Pepper at brunch on Sunday just 'cuz, but I usually stay off my lenten sacrifice for a while.

Well, just giving something up isn't supposed to be the extent of it.

It's like fasting. It's not about skipping a meal or a bunch of meals. It's about denying yourself and putting an emphasis on prayer/meditation/or however it is that you get 'in touch' with what you desire to influence your life beyond personal gratification.

For a lot it's about making a statement and seeking direction to/from God.

For some, it's an obligation that is whined about and ended with great celebration.

proud gonzo
4/13/2006, 06:03 PM
if I gave up something I really liked for 40 days it'd just put an emphasis on being ****ed off and grouchy.

of course I get the feeling i disagree with you rather strongly on the topic of personal gratification, so I won't get into that.

And it would serve no purpose.

As a family, we've given up TV for a month. It's weird for a bit, but you would be surprized what positives it leads to.

You have to want to do it for a particular purpose or you will resent it.

I just explained a side of the issue.

I'm not sure if I've shared enough personal opinion to disagree with.

and that's exactly why I don't participate in Lent and many other traditions.

you meant that you're supposed to better yourself by not living just for personal gratification, right? that's how I interpreted this: "...putting an emphasis on prayer/meditation/or however it is that you get 'in touch' with what you desire to influence your life beyond personal gratification."

People get away from their routines a lot of ways so that they can get a different perspective. This is a way that some do it.

If you don't dig it, that's your business. I don't observe Lent, but I have fasted various things for various lengths of time. I respect people who observe Lent in a positive fashion.

You have to give Muslims credit here, they take their religion
extremely serious. They don't play for 40 days, they do it for 365
with a serious effort.

Good Friday for RCs...

Fasting and Abstinence: In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strenght, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
