I am now in a cubicle with my back to anyone who walks by. It is driving me nuts. People walk up behind me and I don't know it until they start talking to me. If somebody is going postal behind me, I'd like to at least have a sporting chance of getting away. So I'm thinking I might get a webcam and put the window up on my second monitor so I can see people approching in advance.

Anyone have a good suggestion on a good cheap one? I see them as cheap as $10 on new egg, but I dunno if the software succs or not. Small would be the best deal, as in I don't want people to notice it.

Alternatively, get one of those little circular mirrors and stick it on your monitor
so you'll see when someone is coming.

A pit bull in the cube would work too.

Yeah, the lo-tech version of "mirror" would be cheaper, easier to set up, and wouldn't take up real-estate on your monitor.

I had the same problem, but have found a solution. Remember those fake mirrors you put on the headrest of the back seat to watch the boy when he was an infant? Take the fake mirror piece off and attach it to the corner of your cube. I can see them coming from over 20 feet away now. We had our garage sale last weekend or I'd give you our other one.

This one time I walked up to the elevator and she was standing in front of it. The down button had been pressed and she was staring at the trashcan in the corner right by the elevator with this big smile on her face. Nobody else was around, so i assume she pressed the button. I pressed the up button and waited for the elevator.

The elevator right in front of her dinged and opened. It was going down. SHE DIDN'T EVEN FLINCH! She just stood there staring at the trash can and smiling. So the door closed then opened again as it switched to going up. SHE STILL DIDN'T FLINCH. So I got on the elevator and went about my business while I guess she spent the rest of the day smiling at that damn trash can.

JohnnyMack
5/17/2006, 02:48 PM
That's an old ninja trick. You prolly didn't notice her scamper into the elevator behind you and cling from the ceiling waiting to slay you. You really should wear that bike helmet with the rearview mirror if only for your own protection.

This lady sort of freaks me out. Today she was trying to whistle. It was basically just a bunch of random out of tune notes set to no specific rythm. I wish I had a microphone.

Another weird thing is she won't move out of your way. I'm pretty sure if you are walking towards her she doesn't even realize you exist. If you get stuck going through a narrow space while she's going toward you, you might as well wait for her to go by.

I dunno. They said that since our computers were not our property that we couldn't put our own personal webcams on them because they don't have a policy for that. That's not the real reason though, because we are never told the truth about things like this.

I would imagine that somebody saw a news story about a porn webcam or something and decided that webcams are too dangerous to have because they are used for porn. They make decisions like this all the time based on ignorance. For example, I can download almost anything EXCEPT mp3 files. wmv, wav, ogg, wma, avi, asf, asx - those are all acceptable. MP3s are illegal though, so we aren't allowed to download them.

Trust me, they aren't smart enough to think of any valid legal reasons why we shouldn't have one. It's not like there is any top secret stuff going on here anyway. I could stream what I'm doing on my desktop and it would be 1000 times more "dangerous" than me streaming what's going through a webcam. Hell, I'm behind a proxy server and firewall so it's not like I could stream content anyway.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me that someone asked why I have a webcam and they didn't then got mad and complained. Things work that way here.
