View Full Version : Very sad Monday

My best friend, a guy named Lynn, has a neuromuscular disease called
Ataxia. It's extremely rare, and is a long, creul and painful disease that is
ultimately fatal. There is no treatment for Ataxia. It is genetic, and
usually starts showing symptoms in the mid 30's, and by the early
40's, the patient is in a nursing home. His mother died in her mid 40's
from it. His sister is in her early 40's, and is in the nursing home
because of the disease. Lynn, like me, is 37.

He asked me to drive him to Jackson (3 hours) to the specialist that he
sees. That's become too much for him to do just in the last year.
His balance and gait have been altered significantally and he's prone
to fall now. The doc told him to start using a cane or a walker now.
There is talk of very experimental drugs, that may help the symptoms,
but they have serious side effects (seizures, epilepsy, severe swelling
of the feet). In short, he's terminal and it will be a very long, cruel path
to his death.

This is the same guy that had his wife bankrupt and divorce him in the
last 18 months ater 17 years together, and also had 8 feet of
water in his house from Katrina.

I don't understand why one man must endure so much, this is just heartbreaking.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. This is very hard on us, Lynn has
been of ours since college. He and slickwife graduated together in Chemical
Engineering. His mind is still sharp, but his body is failing him.

I've been telling him about SF, and particularly the SO and have encouraged
him to sign up, he'd at least get a few laughs a day. He hasn't done so yet.

Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Sounds like he's already been through more than anyone should ever have to endure, and now he's got this on top of it.

Tell him stories of Lime Sex, 1TC's go carts, fence moving, server problem meltdowns, riots...He'll sign up in a heartbeat just to see what the hell is wrong with the people on here...

So sorry to hear the news about your friend. I'm not familiar with ataxia, but it sounds eerily similar to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), the awful neuromuscular disease that took my Dad. My thoughts and prayers are with him (and you as well).

Strange that you mention ALS - that's what I use when I try to explain Ataxia
to people that don't know. I say "It's very similar to ALS/Lou Gehrig's
disease, a very long and cruel death".

Sorry for your loss to such a terrible and cruel disease, and the thoughts and
prayers are greatly appreciated.

Tragic, I missed the best part of that thread. I saw it in its infancy, but
didn't check back. GAK!@
