View Full Version : Big 12 QB's who have gone on to pro success...Any?

This discussion began in another thread, but I am having trouble naming a Big 12 graduated QB who went on to or is currently enjoying success in the NFL. Simms is a starter, but he is only a bad game away from being benched. Besides him, is there anyone else from the conference in the last, say 20 years? I know we are primarily a running conference, but this is ridiculous. Can anyone provide any clarity?

Joe Montana and Dan Marino did all right.

Can't remember what years they played for OU though.

You got me. Kingsbury is a third stringer at the Jets I think. Michael Bishop was on the Pat's roster for a while, but I think he's in the NFL now. Those guys from Colorado are playing somewhere. I'm out.

Thanks. Stewart was pretty successful, for at least one season, and perhaps another.

The Big 12 is a relatively young league, dominated by running quarterbacks, so therefore little NFL success. Rosenfels from Iowa State is still in the NFL.
Chris Simms. I think in this year's draft several QBs may stick - Brad Smith, Reggie McNeal, Vince Young, and of course, Jeff Capel.

Yeah...Chris Simms is by far the most successful QB. He is the starter for Tampa Bay and he was in the playoffs last year. I fully expect that he will be even better this year...it has taken time for Gruden to fix all of the crap that Smack screwed up.

Simms just needed a real coach to show him how to play QB. Jon Gruden was the ultimate stroke of luck for him.

Vince...since he convinced Brown & Davis that he couldn't run the playbook midway thorugh the 2004 season, it's unlikely he'll do much in the NFL. It's not really a place you can wing it.

In fact, the NFL QB position has gotten to the point where you don't need a superstar to get you a Super Bowl ring. Jim Plunkett anyone? Trent Dilfer? Kurt Warner? Mark Rypien?

And, then there's Dan Marino, with all of those passing records and no ring. In the NFL, it's a team game with the QB being the brains. Vince is nothing but scramble, scramble, fumble, scramble, whip off an Uncle Rico toss, scramble...he'll be as injury prone as Michael Vick.

A few GM's with a bit more expertise on the subject seem to disagree:D

Not to make you dodge a wrench, but GM's with experience also picked Ryan Leaf and other 'can't miss' players.

Running backs?

Given the fact that we are a running conference, that's an even more disturbing question....

You know what though? It really doesn't matter, b/c success in the NCAA really has nothing to do with the pro's. I know getting to the next level is the primary reason a lot of the kids play college ball, but as fans look at it, and the sport as a whole, the college game is completely different than the NFL.

I'm pretty sure that Simms and Sage Rosenfels are the only Big 12 QBs to ever start a game in the NFL.

Seneca Wallace?

I think he started against Green Bay in the last 2005 regular season game. Seattle loves him, at least as a receiver.

AustinTXHorn
4/11/2006, 05:53 PM
I don't think he started, but he did throw 17 passes in the game so he might as well have.

So I guess you could say that 2 of the 3 most successful Big 12 QBs have come from Iowa State.

He didn't start since Brett Favre still has his streak going.

From the Big 8 ....

Steve Grogan played around 14 years for New England

Nolan Cromwell converted to safety and played a few years for the Rams.

John Hadl
John Hadl (born February 15, 1940 in Lawrence, Kansas) was a professional American football player.

After playing halfback on both offense and defense at the University of Kansas as a sophomore, Hadl played quarterback for his last two years at Kansas, and was selected as the school's Player of the Century. He was an All-American at running back in 1960 and at quarterback in 1961.

He is 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) and 210 lb (95 kg). He joined the American Football League's San Diego Chargers in 1962. He shared quarterbacking duties until 1966, when he became San Diego's starting quarterback, and averaged over 3,000 yards and 23 tds per (14-game) season for the next four years.

He was the American Football League's leading passer in 1965 and 1968. He was an AFL All-Star in 1964, 1965, 1968 and in 1969, when he was the AFL All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player. He is ranked as the third leading passer in league history, behind Hall of Famers Jack Kemp and George Blanda.

Considering their team's mediocrity at the time it's pretty ironic, IMO, but I can't think of a better duo than KSU's Steve Grogan & Lynn Dickey. They combined for just over 50,000 passing yards in the pros.

After a great run in San Diego John Hadl was the NFC Player of the Year for the Rams in 1973. Hadl was then traded to, I believe the Packers then back to the Rams a year latter, where his career then tanked.

Thanks for all the posts. Some real great names from the past. It's strange that the conference hasn't has more success in that position in the pros. When you consider all the mediocrity at the position in the pros, it's really weird. Here's to seeing some success with our recent grads and soon to be grads.

I could care less about QBs in the NFL. I am a big fan of college offenses. I think they are more diverse and more fun to watch. Some of the styles of play just doesn't work in the NFL.

Thats why college football is superior to Pro football IMHO.

For what its worth, Eric Crouch just signed with the Argos of the CFL. Don't know if he is going to QB or not, but they also had Michael Bishop for a couple of seasons.

Not that I watch CFL football, but it does get a little bit of press up here.
