View Full Version : TD2K vs. the yard, 2006

As some of you know I am obsessed with having a nice yard. I moved last fall and so all my hard work on the yard at the last place was lost. This place has a TERRIBLE yard. Nothing but weeds. A few weeks ago I attacked it with roundup killing the early weeds, today I declared war with 2,4-D Amine which is supposed to kill any broad leaf weed, and not the grass. We'll see.

DIE WEEDS DIE!! :les:

If I sprayed all that around here Id have nothing but rocks growing

yeah, I'll probably have to put out turf builder or even grass seed after the weeds get dead.

I'll put $20 on the yard to win. ;)

Roundup kills pretty much everything, including the grass. I am amazed that you have anything left after spraying it with Roundup.

If you spray roundup while the grass is still dormant it won't hurt it, which is what I did (got the first weeds of spring). Now that the grass has started turning green (and many more weeds are coming up) I had to use something else that kills the weeds and not the grass.

Ed Zackery.

I get damn poa annua grass in my yard every year. Broadleaf weeds are easy to kill, but getting unwanted grass out of your yard is hard to do without killing the bermuda.

If I can manage to get rid of the dandelions, clover, and that weed that puts out tons of little purple flowers that's a darn good start.

The purple flower stuff (henbit or chickweed) is really hard to kill. I just pull the darn stuff - it comes up real easy.

I'd be out there for DAYS

I think this stuff is supposed to kill chickweed. I'll know in a day or two if it worked.

(After looking up the two you named I seem to have henbit. TONS of it. So we'll see)

i spent my last week off tilling half my back yard up and planting grass seed.
had the front yard sprayed and got the scotts on it and I'm ready for a pretty yard.

Roundup, or course, will kill anything. Otherwise, good luck killing henbit.

I always try to pull the stuff early before it spreads.

did you till up that tree in front of your shed?

I gots too many big trees in my yard to get really good grass. The bermuda won't grow evenly. Only thing I've been able to do is hit it with some weed-n-feed and spread fescue seed around the bare spots. That doesn't always work real well.

My other option would be to have the entire yard re-sodded with shadegrass, but I'd have to clear that through my homeowner's association, because then my house would stand out. They hate that. ;)

I'd like to plant some grass, but I don't have a tiller to break up the dirt and I figured the birds would just eat it before it got started.

so I'm just gonna try my best to kill the weeds and then fertilize the heck out of what little grass I have.

I had a big tree in my front yard that bermuda wouldn't grow under. I planted rye grass under it, but it looked stupid - different color than the bermuda, plus it was green in the winter. So I cut the the tree down. Took care of that problem.

yes, but I still want a great yard. I understand that, but I wouldn't go as far as tilling it all up and reseeding it for two reasons.

1. You lose any money and time you put into it.
2. You may **** off your landlord, even if you've already asked them if it's okay.

Laying down pre-emergent, spraying the weeds, adding all sorts of Scotts stuff = cool.

Tilling and reseeding = eek.

TopDaugIn2000
4/10/2006, 09:34 AM
yeah, I agree with you. I thought about just putting out seed and seeing what happens, that's not so much work and it won't **** him off in any way.
I'm gonna see what happens with the weed killer and then go from there. Hopefully enough grass will be under all those weeds to have a nice yard.

TopDaugIn2000
4/10/2006, 09:45 AM
If I throw out some grass seed and then water the hell out of it will the birds still eat it????

I could use a rake, but that's too much damn work.

frankensooner
4/10/2006, 09:58 AM
Okay, what kind of grass seed are you talking about? Bermuda is expensive btw. I put out a winter yard every fall. I use crossfire tall fescue. It is a nice shade of green and does well in Oklahoma. It is a wet grass though and is not the easiest to mow. It looks great though. You will pobably need to rake the yard and it wouldn't hurt to aerate it either. You will need to keep the seeds moist, not wet, so water it twice a day until it is established. Don't overfertilize and don't use weed and feed on the baby seeds.
Oh and my fescue only lasts until it gets really hot.

TopDaugIn2000

I'm considering tree removal as another option. Big huge Bradford Pears are a pain in the rear. I tried the rye grass thing 2 years ago with the same result. The fescue looks better at least. If you keep it mowed you can't really tell unless you're standing on it.

I agree. Roundup kills bermuda quite nicely. Spray, give it a couple weeks (less if it's really hot and dry), and then pull out the dead stuff.

Right. Bag the plants before you spray.

Although, I once accidentally hosed down a fairly stout rose bush with roundup. I cringed and immediately sprayed it with a lot of water. It shrugged off the chemicals like a kung-fu master fights off students. No evidence of any effect.
