interesting

i still dont see anything about shoring up our borders, so as far as i'm concerned, they've failed

The compromise creates a tiered system that gives preference to illegals who have been in the United States longer and have established roots in their communities:

— Illegals in the United States less than two years would be required to leave immediately. If caught once, they would be subject to a misdemeanor, and if caught twice they would be charged with a felony. About 2 million to 3 million people fall into this category.

— Illegals in the United States between two and five years would have go to one of 16 ports of entry in the United States, determined by the U.S. Visit program, and declare themselves. They would be given a temporary visa and allowed back to their U.S. residences immediately. Once in the United States, they could apply for the citizenship path spelled out in the McCain-Kennedy bill. About 3 million to 4 million people fall into this category.

— Illegals who could prove they have been in the United States for more than five years would immediately be given guest worker status and would get on the 11-year path to citizenship. They would not have to declare themselves as guest workers. This path would be open to about 5 million illegals living in the United States.

If they don't close the border, we're going to be doing this same thing in the next 5-10 years with the next crop of illegals.

Those numbers don't add up to the number I heard quoted on illegals - 26 million!

That border is just as much a national security issue as it is an immigration issue. It blows my mind that we've allowed it to stay like it is for almost five years after 9/11.

What a crock - we get to put them ina jail and pay for that too?

The wall worked well for the Chinese, lets give it a try.

Just ask the Kid From Brooklyn.

Will we get an "Easy" button?

so the lesson is... the longer you break a law, the greater the reward?

i'm so going to stop paying taxes. i mean, that's gotta be a rewarding law to break. :D

my sister just e-mailed me this - nice:

Dear President Bush:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and
I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the
border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements.
I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and
laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm
on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might
need, whether I use them or not.

3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the
flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy
access to government services.

9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any
effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the
memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police
officers speak English.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on
my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and
don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and
never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place
on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these
things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure
that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting
with your V.P.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

Sincerely,

David M. Bresnahan

I'd gladly trade the working immigrants for all of our non-working welfare 'citizens'. I'll say one thing about those illegals, they are risking a lot to come here and work. That's a lot more than I can say about generations of lazy assed welfare recipients living in the US legally as 'citizens'.

That being said, we still need to put a huge wall up so we can at least get a handle on who and what is crossing the border.

So how are they going to verify the number of years that someone has been in the country? Seems like the forging business is about to pick up.

PS
I just read the story on CNN and there is no way in hell that the House is going to pass that bill as is.
