The 25 best college-basketball coaching jobs, determined by The Oklahoman’s Berry Tramel using a criteria of tradition, NCAA Tournament success, coaching stability, budgets and passion of fans:
Rank, school - NCAA record - NCAA titles
1. Kentucky - 99-43 - 7: Four UK coaches (Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith) have won NCAA titles.
2. Duke - 85-27 - 3: Blue Devils were a power even before Krzyzewski.
3. North Carolina - 89-37 - 4: Three UNC coaches (McGuire, Smith, Williams) have won NCAA titles.
4. Kansas - 73-35 - 2: Great stability. Only 6 coaches since 1919.
5. Michigan State - 40-19 - 2: Stole the mantle from arch-foe Michigan.
6. Indiana - 59-28 - 5: Facilities need upgrade, but mighty passion.
7. Arizona - 41-24 - 1: One question: great job or great coach (Lute Olson)?
8. Syracuse - 48-31 - 1: Flagship school of Eastern hoops.
9. UCLA - 90-33 - 11: Big winner, but lots of coaching turnover.
10. Connecticut - 42-26 - 2: Same question as Arizona.
11. Louisville - 53-34 - 2: Attracts quality - Denny Crum & Rick Pitino.
12. Maryland - 35-20 - 1: Never became UCLA of the East, but quite strong.
13. Illinois - 38-27 - 0: Strange: 3 coaches since Lou Henson.
14. Florida - 23-12 - 1: Little tradition but gaining steam.
15. Texas - 28-27 - 0: Lacks passion but not resources.
16. Ohio State - 38-22 - 1: Texas North - should be even better.
17. Arkansas - 39-27 - 1: OU beware - Hogs fell after 2 great coaches.
18. Purdue - 27-20 - 0: Three Final Four coaches since ’69.
19. Oklahoma State - 37-21 - 2: Same question as Connecticut.
20. Oklahoma - 31-24 - 0: Two straight coaches have thrived.
21. Cincinnati - 40-23 - 2: Is there life after Bob Huggins?
22. Villanova - 42-27 - 1: Not a huge budget.
23. Utah - 35-29 - 1: Under-appreciated job.
24. Stanford - 19-13 - 1: Duke West and Duke Light.
25. North Carolina State - 32-21 - 2: Two coaches won NCAA titles at Little Brother U.
I would reverse UCLA and Kansas just because of the NCs. Arkansas should be a bit lower. Texas is way too high. They may be really good now but they didn't do anything till the last 5 years really.
