The 25 best college-basketball coaching jobs, determined by The Oklahoman’s Berry Tramel using a criteria of tradition, NCAA Tournament success, coaching stability, budgets and passion of fans:

Rank, school - NCAA record - NCAA titles

1. Kentucky - 99-43 - 7: Four UK coaches (Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith) have won NCAA titles.

2. Duke - 85-27 - 3: Blue Devils were a power even before Krzyzewski.

3. North Carolina - 89-37 - 4: Three UNC coaches (McGuire, Smith, Williams) have won NCAA titles.

4. Kansas - 73-35 - 2: Great stability. Only 6 coaches since 1919.

5. Michigan State - 40-19 - 2: Stole the mantle from arch-foe Michigan.

6. Indiana - 59-28 - 5: Facilities need upgrade, but mighty passion.

7. Arizona - 41-24 - 1: One question: great job or great coach (Lute Olson)?

8. Syracuse - 48-31 - 1: Flagship school of Eastern hoops.

9. UCLA - 90-33 - 11: Big winner, but lots of coaching turnover.

10. Connecticut - 42-26 - 2: Same question as Arizona.

11. Louisville - 53-34 - 2: Attracts quality - Denny Crum & Rick Pitino.

12. Maryland - 35-20 - 1: Never became UCLA of the East, but quite strong.

13. Illinois - 38-27 - 0: Strange: 3 coaches since Lou Henson.

14. Florida - 23-12 - 1: Little tradition but gaining steam.

15. Texas - 28-27 - 0: Lacks passion but not resources.

16. Ohio State - 38-22 - 1: Texas North - should be even better.

17. Arkansas - 39-27 - 1: OU beware - Hogs fell after 2 great coaches.

18. Purdue - 27-20 - 0: Three Final Four coaches since ’69.

19. Oklahoma State - 37-21 - 2: Same question as Connecticut.

20. Oklahoma - 31-24 - 0: Two straight coaches have thrived.

21. Cincinnati - 40-23 - 2: Is there life after Bob Huggins?

22. Villanova - 42-27 - 1: Not a huge budget.

23. Utah - 35-29 - 1: Under-appreciated job.

24. Stanford - 19-13 - 1: Duke West and Duke Light.

25. North Carolina State - 32-21 - 2: Two coaches won NCAA titles at Little Brother U.

I would reverse UCLA and Kansas just because of the NCs. Arkansas should be a bit lower. Texas is way too high. They may be really good now but they didn't do anything till the last 5 years really.

Between John Wooden and Jim Garrick UCLA was a doormat.

Yeah, top jobs and most successful programs are necessarily the same thing.

If I were a coach and I wasn't going to my " dream job" I would would have a few simple criteria.

1. $$$
2. Expecations that fans, AD, etc has for success
3. Potential program has to reach that success: talent, budget, facilites

There would be other secondary criteria but it would be that.

you can always argue position, but the top 10 are hard to argue with. another gauge is when a program endures more than one coach. that's yet to be proven with syracuse, uconn, and arizona.

look what happened to georgetown after thompson, or what happens to cincy without huggins will be interesting.

And ironically, I'd have either Seton Hall or St. John's before I'd have Utah on that list. Other than the occasional 'star' player at Utah in the last decade they have been a middle of the road at best team.

If anything this is just further proof of how the NBA early entry process is killing college basketball.

Kentucky is no higher than third.

Louisville and Illinois need to switch places.

OU is by far better than texas if you look at proven track record. and yes, as far as i'm concerned college hoops started in the early 80's ;)

but i don't remember texas even posing a threat until around 5 years ago...

Michigan State isn't that good of a job. Izzo is that good of a coach. This list is retarded. Also UCLA is a great job.

Before Pete Carroll was hired, this list would have had USC in the teens on a similar list for football. Everyone knows that after Texas, no school is a better job than USC. There are some that are close, but none better.

That list is beyond horrible.

that's ridiculous.

he's right though, because they would have discounted anything done under John Robinson's first tenure. (re: USC)

whoever would leave USC out of the top 7 in college football jobs, regardless of their run in the late 90's is a fool.

Again, it depends on the criteria of what makes a top job. If titles are the main benchmark in football for example than OU, Neb, ND, Ala, Ohio St, USC, and Miami are the best jobs. I would submit that Alabama or Neb isn't as good of a job as Hook 'em , Florida or Michigan where the athletic budget is just as big so the pay would match, they have just as good a chance of landing the big recruits and winning and in the case of Bama' you don't have out of control boosters that get the program in trouble. I'm just trying to see it through the eyes of a coach looking at a prospective job which is what I presume that the article was trying to rank.
