Funny, they've got emergency defibrillators installed in locations around my
building.

Is that something you really want to pull off of a wall and use with no training??

The 'consumer model' is pretty easy to work with and walks you through it.

My luck I'd get some illiterate guy having to revive me, while trying to learn to read the instructions...

or a messican that can't read english

Technically, you're supposed to be certified to use them, but they're pretty idiot-proof. I don't think you're allowed to have one unless somebody on the premises is trained to use it. In a dire emergency, a person with basic CPR training could probably figure it out if they had to.

It's also impossible to do. The AED won't even charge unless it's properly hooked up and it detects a shockable rhythm. You can't shock inanimate objects, and you can't shock a conscious human being--unless you happen to have somebody in v-fib laying around that you can used to trick it.

I don't think that's true with all of them though... George Clooney told a story once about the defibrillators on the set of E.R.:

Well, most of those ....those are fake. You know.... Those are, on our show, you know....there...they've been gutted..... except for one. And... so for about 3 years I've been doing this..."Hello"...with the (Imitates using the paddles as a phone).. I thought it was pretty funny. There were a bunch of people on the set, and I took them out and went...."Clear", and I stuck them on my chestand it was the working one....... That's good fun right there!

The professional defibrilators, no, but I think all AED's have that safety feature. Docs and paramedics have to look at an EKG before they decide to shock you; they can also shock rhythms that an AED will ignore.

I don't know - 10, 15 maybe? I kept saying, "please call back and do it again until I can guess who you are." You gotta get your kicks where you can.

AEDs are fairly standard and easy to use - that wonderful mechanical voice. But AEDs are only helpful if that is someone around who knows CPR - since only some of the victims actually need the shock.

With the new guidelines from the American Heart Association, almost every AED is now outdated. And the new chip to update the settings on the AEDs isn't going to be available until next January. :( So we just have to follow the directions on the AED and do the best you can.
