Paul Verhoeven, director of the first "Basic Instinct" (which scored $353 million worldwide) as well as the widely ridiculed "Showgirls" (now regarded as something of a camp classic), attributes the genre's demise to the current American political climate.

"Anything that is erotic has been banned in the United States," said the Dutch native. "Look at the people at the top (of the government). We are living under a government that is constantly hammering out Christian values. And Christianity and sex have never been good friends."

...and if there's one thing that's horrible for a society, it's Christian values.

Verhoeven is a moran. I liked Starship Troopers OK, but Showgirls? Pfft!

WERD! I just thought it was interesting that somehow it was the government's fault rather than crappy writing and a no-talent lead actress. But what do I know? I'm just a rube from the sticks.

All I've seen is a minute-long clip from the Letterman show...and man, that was bad enough to keep me away.

Bush is all powerful. He can do everything from cause hurricanes to make movies do badly at the box office. Funny how he didn't do the same to BB Mountain.

Wow, I thought the thread subject was just a joke. Can't believe somebody actually believes that. But then again some people think they were abducted by aliens and that the holocaust never happened...

Why are people in Hollywood so willingly stupid? Are they so much in a bubble that they don't realize the vast majority of people in America don't want to be offended? Can they not look at box office receipts enough to see that nothing suceeds like family movies?

The whole thing is utter nonsense. They can crank out a million and one implausible gay cowboy pictures and slutty psycho pictures and it won't change the fact that this country is moral. Gee, we're sorry your crappy sex-themed movie wasn't greeted as the next Gone With The Wind, but get over yourself. Grass infested, soft-porn peddling, chocolate pudding-hating windbag!

Anything to get away from his aforementioned bad script and crappy leads...It can't be the writers fault a movie sucked. George W. Bush is the source of all problems in America...Obesity, illegal immigrants, cancer caused by barbecued foods (it's not really the barbecued food, it's good 'ol GWB mixin something in the sauce that causes the cancer)...

Well, okay, I suppose I can't verify this guy's hate for chocolate pudding, but...who is he kidding? Even for those remotely interested in the first Basic Instinct...Sharon Stone? About two decades later? I mean, does anyone really care? Her entire career is built on one scene of her briefly spreading her legs and this guy is surprised no one is flocking to see the genius of the continuation of it?

Here's what the guy should be asking himself, "Crap! Am I such as halfas*ed director that all I can think of to do is try to re-sell a twenty year old movie?" Bugs Bunny said of these folks, 'What a Maroon!'

Uh, yeah, OK. I guess that's why Desperate Housewives is one of the most watched shows on TV!

Actually, depravity must sell, b/c it's followed by CSI Miami and closely by 2 and a half men!

http://tv.yahoo.com/nielsen/

Nice little try at distinguishing the morality of 'Merica.

It's a crappy movie. Verhoeven and Ezsterhaus are morons that haven't made a good flick in years!

BTW- Michael Caton Jones directed it! Not Verhoeven.

Yeah, but it says there are about "110.2 million television households." So, less than 14% of television households bother with Desperate Housewives. Or, fewer than one in five people you meet from day to day will have watched it.

The other 86% are watching Gary ask Val if the cloud is going to tornado.

OK, you can jockey the numbers all you want. It is still indicative of what is popular. And it's very popular.

It is strange to think of how M Caton Jones' career and how it has tanked.
Dude hasn't made a decent flick since Rob Roy. It all ended with the Jackal.

Speaking of Jackal...I was at my uncle's place once. Not too mention that he's a little off...anyway we was watching TV and he told me that that the channel we were watching (USA) was going to air a movie called the Jackoff. I said, "What???" He kept insisting that he saw the commerical (preview). Anyway, a few minutes later, the network showed the preview, and my uncle said, "There it is...Jackoff", then he started laughing. I said, "Jackal...AL....not Jackoff."

Anyway, heh, back to your regular scheduled programming.
