Coaching Search: Shockers' Turgeon declines comment
By DAVE SITTLER World Sports Writer
4/1/2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- Wichita State basketball coach Mark Turgeon declined to comment Friday on any possible connection he might have with the opening at Oklahoma. Wichita television station KWCH-TV reported Thursday night that Oklahoma had been granted permission to talk to Turgeon and that he could interview as soon as Friday with OU athletic director Joe Castiglione.

Turgeon, who is here for the Final Four and NABC meetings, was contacted by a Tulsa World reporter in his hotel room.

Asked about his interest in replacing Kelvin Sampson, who left OU earlier this week for Indiana, Turgeon said: "I don't want to comment on that right now. I just don't want to get into it."

When asked about the report on the Wichita television station, Turgeon said: "Uh, again, no comment."

In his sixth season at Wichita State, Turgeon led the Shockers to 26-7 record, and the school advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in 25 years.

In other developments, sources confirmed that Memphis coach John Calipari remains interested in the OU job, along with North Carolina-Charlotte's Bobby Lutz, Marquette's Tom Crean, Creighton's Dana Altman and Oregon's Ernie Kent.

Those sources also confirmed that Calipari and Lutz have used

various methods to make their interest known to Castiglione.

"Calipari thinks Castiglione is the best athletic director in America," one source said. "And he loves (OU football coach) Bob Stoops."

Another source said Lutz has had influential people call Castiglione on his behalf, including Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood.

Lutz has also forwarded to Castiglione copies of his win-loss record against some Big 12 schools and some coaches who are in the conference or have been in the league..

Calipari would be great. Isn't Dana Altman a former Kansas State coach?
