View Full Version : Any other power tool users feel fortunate to have fingers?

I have used a corded power planer for many years with no incidents.

I recently got a cordless one and I was using it in a way the would make Norm crap his panties. The location of the blades is a little different than my old one and when I started up it caught my index finger right next to the nail.

If you know anything about planers, the don't cut deep, but they cut viscously. It ripped a chunk nearly the size of a dime loose. Not worth going to the doctor, but impressive enough to induce repulsive reactions from a few people.

With only minimal changes to the event, I could have done the kind of damage that sticks with you for the rest of your life.

Maybe 44 and I need to enroll in a safety course.

The good news is that it's great to get a reality check when it costs you very little.

I had an incident with one of these two years ago...http://www.rickswoodshopcreations.com/images/Tools/Recommended_Tools/Miter_Saws/Dewalt_DW708_12_Sliding_Miter_Saw_Large.jpg

It was roughly 3:00 a.m., and I had simply lost track of time. I was doing some finish work for a really nice oak cabinet. I have cable, dvd... the works in my shop. So I can throw on a movie or enjoy some quality Comedy while cutting things to pieces. I sometimes even surf our there for a while while the glue is drying.

The saw's protective shield came loose as I was cutting a 45 on some trim molding. Not thinking, I went to grab it. I was less than an inch from being forever known as "lefty." At best, I would have been "Thumb-Only Guy."

I no longer have all-nighters in the shop.

This is an electric meat slicer. You know, the kind you can put a big honking ham, roast beef or boloney on and make sandwich slices -- sometimes I wish I had my own...but I digress

Anyhoo, see the guard which is on a swingarm and can be rotated out of the way permitting a person to simply use their bare fingers to push the item being sliced against the electrically powered razor-sharp rotary blade?

Don't evar do that. Use the guard, even when you are in a hurry...especially when you are in a hurry.

Butcher shop tools creep me out. Those meat slicers and industrial band saws are too much for me to use. A band saw would really save me a lot of time in several situations, but I refuse to buy one. It's like owning several hand guns with a toddler in the house... you are just asking for it.

I would guess that band saws are responsible for most of the power tool injuries in HS shop classes. Most try to cut a little faster than they should and there's a sudden lurch forward as you exit the material. Usually good for stitches in the thumb, but not much worse.

Check out the video demo at this site. The also make other tools with similar features, though I didn't see them on the same site.

That's the big problem with most saws... there is no permit required to buy them, and the nature of wood grain can seriously mess up an otherwise "good day." I don't think guvment control is the answer, but there does need to be some sort of voluntary accelerated education program included.

"I'm Jack's Finger" comes to mind as a possible instruction video title.

And yes, getting in a hurry with one of these saws is never good.

the only thing that kept me losing the tip of my right index finger on a slicer like that one was the fingernail. yes, i was in a hurry. those things are dangerous even to take apart and clean.

About 3 years ago I had a kickback from a table saw that literlally picked me up off the floor as a chunk of 3/4" yellow pine came crashing right into my gut. Still have a nice scar where the corner of the board hit me to remind me of just what those things can do to a person.

Would have been MUCH worse if I was a little taller......and male.

I love me some power tools.

Clearly, their product does not work well for those of us in the hotdog cutting business.
