View Full Version : GHP's Pile O' Dirt Goes To Camp

GottaHavePride
3/31/2006, 04:25 PM
Phase 1 1/4 is now complete in our backyard renovation. For those of you playing along at home, Phase 1 was "Order a big pile of dirt". Check. Phase 2 was to be "Spread dirt around the backyard and fill in holes." and Phase 3 is on track as "Plant stuff".

However, Phase 1 1/2, codenamed "Move the Big Freakin' Pile O Dirt" is now cleared for start as we have finished Phase 1 1/4, or "Knock over the fence so we can get the freakin' wheelbarrow to the backyard".

So at any rate, our shoddily-built front fence is now gone:

http://img421.imageshack.us/img421/5905/thefencesectionmissing9lk.jpg

The gate was not wide enough for a wheelbarrow to go through, but now it is. To top it off, PG and I found that only one of the posts was properly set in the ground with concrete, and they were both rotting anyway. Oh, and there were some bricks down there for good measure. Here's the pile of crap that came out of the hole we dug to remove the fenceposts:

http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/9683/crapfromtheground3mf.jpg

We saved the section of fence so we can put new posts on it later and re-set it in the ground. Unless we just decide to rebuild that fence so it isn't crap. See?

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/1028/thefencesectionremoved6uy.jpg
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/1006/thefencesectionremoved9gu.jpg

Of course we were left with a bit of a hole in the ground where the fence posts were. So I shoveled the dirt that came out of the hole back in and covered i with the Giant Paving Stone that was down there as well. That was to prevent small dogs from falling in the hole and starving. It's still a little low, though. Does anyone know where I could get some dirt to fill in the hole? Wait, nevermind, someone put 6 tons of dirt in the driveway. That'll do.

PG measures things. The gate was 34", and the wheelbarrows at Lowe's or wherever were all at least 37" across.

Oh, and I forgot the casualty tally: RIP, shovel. You were a good friend.

And this is more fun that hiring Mexicans. It gives us an excuse to beat the ground with the broken shovel handle while shouting "MOTHER****ER! MOTHER****ER! MOTHER****ER!"

Have you set up the video camera on a tripod to film the hilarity that will surely ensue from you guys wheeling 6 tons of dirt around the house? It'd make a cool flick.

Because I would much rather destroy a fence than pay $80 for a brand new wheelbarrow and then pound the sides in.

You can pound the sides back out. And I'lll be having fun with sledgehammers and wheelbarrows tomorrow. Only my fence is nicley rigged so I just use a drill to take the panel off and put it back on. I just need to rig up a harness so the dogs can pull the wheelbarrow.

Offer to hire the guys. When they decline. Get a sign that says "I tried to hire him to move dirt and he refused. Don't give him anything". Stand about 25 yards ahead of him.

Saturday morning: GHP went to Addison (there's a different thread about that) and Iggy and I went to the Medieval Fair for an hour and a half or so. We came back to my house and he, my mom, and I shoveled/raked dirt until 4:30, at which point we had to get cleaned up for the musical at 8 pm.

Anyway, after that afternoon of work, this is the state of the dirt pile. Both cars are currently parked in the garage. :D
