any helpful fatherly advice for a young man that is going to buy his first lawn mower?

I'm thinking of a 21" mulcher/rearbagger and Lowe's has one for about $170. I have a small yard and really don't want nor need the self propelled option.

Any dos or don'ts that I need to know about?

If you can swing something with a Honda engine, you won't regret it.
Those are, by far, the best running small engines available.

I agree but I'm not a real grown up with a real yard so I'm just looking for something to get a few seasons out of. I'd really like to spend $100 on one that just mulches and hope to get two seasons out of it but I can't find one for that cheap.

Why do you insist on taking jobs away from hard working illegals?

Well, that's kinda the deal. I'm taking it to Nuevo Laredo on the weekends to mow grass down there.

I had a $99 mulcher that lasted 9 years. I just upgraded to a self-propelled. They are easy to maintain and easy to use.

then get an electric one for the cheap, and hope you don't run over the cord.

Otherwise, get a Honda. Mine is on its 9th season. Its great.

You ought to look in the paper for a used one if you aren't looking to keep it forever. I found one several years ago to use as a temporary and got it for $50. It ran great for several years and I sold it for $50.

self-propelled mowers blow. they are way too slow and weigh a ton. i summer jobbed mowing with a Snapper (fantastic) and a self-propelled John Deere (heavy as hell, slow as a turd, guzzled gas).

my mowing philosophy as a kid was work harder, mow faster, done earlier.

Buddy, your'e not going to find much for under $150.00. Just get a Wallyworld special with a 2 hp Briggs and Stratton engine and when you get a bigger place use it for the touchup work.

given the option between bag and mulch...i'd shoot myself before I bagged again.

i have a self propelled that is very quick, but not cheap. i young guy like yourself doesn't need a self propelled, but bagging is the succ.

I don't know if they make "Lawnboy" mowers any more, but I have one that my grandpa gave me that is AWESOME. He bought it over 25 years ago (It's older than me) and runs like a CHAMP.

here you go, so you can hold a pipe (or beer) with the other hand!

You might need another hand to engage the blade, but that mower is cool. Especially for $110!

it is a bit of a stretch to think of mowing the lawn while smoking the pipe.

Well, I guess it depends on what is in the pipe.

Yeah, he's a little underdressed. I usually add a tie to the outfit when cutting the grass.

my dog would eat that thing. I just can't see spending a grand for something that would provide ours of enjoyment until either my dog destroyed it or she flipped it over and it lops her head off.

you people suck at lawnmower advice. I was telling my brother that I was going to get a mower and he told me just to go get the Hond amower from my parents house. My stepdad got a new mower and was gonna give my brother the old one but he let me have it.

Free Honda mower!!!!

This is kinda like reading one of those sucko mystery novels where about 4 of the main characterrs commited the crime. Then, on the last page, you find out the gardner for the rich guy who had no motive did the deed in a rage of passion. The perp was so inconsequential to the story line that the author never gave him a name.

Thanks 1TC, you're right up there.

1TC, I saw a nice little lawn mover at Wal Mart for about 175 dollars. It should be good for your small lawn. Look at your nearest Walmart in the Lawn & Garden Dept. I believe it was a Briggs & Stratton.

I gots me a freebie from the stepdad!!!

He's such a bright guy. As he was splanin' the mower to me he made note that 'the deck on this one is steel, they(Honda) must've sold out to a Japanese company because all the new ones have plastic decks.' I just nodded and said, 'Oh'.
