By conference.

It seems to have boiled down to a Bud Wilkinson vs TO discussion. I've added a few angles, but I felt we should have a similar discOUrse over here.

Any other thOUghts?

Switzer owned Tom Osborn.

How can you be "the greatest" in your conference when another coach in your conference consistently owned your ***?

'nuff said.

Yeah, what's up with that? He's supposedly happy about the move. Roark vs Roark at the nose...

When you recruit 537 Ol's and 1 high school dt, you have to do something about the lack of interior DL depth.

If another coach owns you to the tune of 12-5, you're not the best of anything.

Switzer has the best winning % of any coach since Knute Rockne.

(yeah I know...wikipedia is sometimes worthless but it's true in this case...)

Switzer resigned from his coaching position at Oklahoma early in 1989, with a career record of 157-29-4. His winning percentage of .837 is fourth-best all-time, and he posted remarkable records against several famous contemporaries, going 3-0-1 against Darrell Royal, 12-5 against Tom Osborne, 5-3 against Jimmy Johnson, 2-0 against Bobby Bowden and 1-0 against Joe Paterno and Woody Hayes.

the three that precede him on the list coached prior to the rise of Nazi Germany. Tom Osborne rounds out the top 5.

IMO Barry Switzer is one of the most underrated coaches in any major American sport at any time ever.

After reading the Nebbish thread...the fact that their fanbase could look past Barry's 12-5 pwnedge of Tom and compare him w/ Bud is a pretty good example.

Switzer also beat Bo Schembechler in the 75/76 Orange Bowl. 1-0, there too.

I love Barry and his record against big teams speaks for it self. The guy was great against probably all the other top coaches during his period. But I would still take Bud over him. I think Bud and Barry should both be top 5 coaches all time. But you can argue the same with Nebraska with Dunlevy and Osborne.

I didn't say that. I may put him in the top 10 range. Won 2 national championships in a row and basically started the Nebraska program which Osborne really got going. Wasn't Nebraska ranked in for 32 years or so?

I wonder if Nick could find out Dunlevy's winning % for us. It's hard to argue the point if you don't know that.

It's amazing when a guy can go undefeated as a college football coach and then play forward for the Golden State Warriors :)

Your number is based on the idea that Nick averages only a single mistake per post.

It's my belief that he's more prolific than that.
