View Full Version : Joe C. is awesome!

I just watched the entire 35 minute press conference Joe C. held yesterday. Anyone who's worried about the B-ball teams future should watch it. This guy has got to be the best AD ever. If I'm an opposing coach in the Big12, I would be very worried right now with Joe at the wheel. I'm laying odds that by this time next year, we all wonder why we ever liked Sampson in the first place.

So who gets credit for the womens b-ball attendance going through the roof this year?

Watch how much ticket prices will increase for the women next year. It's going to hurt.

True, but even at games where the house is packed, he kills the mood with crazy *** promotions. Our fans suck and that doesn't help him but he doesn't help the atmosphere either.

Take one look at the BBall band. Listen to the songs they play. Notice how the director is forced to wear a headset.

Listen to the songs they don't play.

What difference does it make what they play when there's only 2,500 in attendance to hear them?

You exagerate the low attendance so much that it waters down your point.

I think it's kind of indicative, though. I mean, you can go to the basketball game in person, have your funny sign making fun of the opposing coach taken away, and sit through a goofy promotion during every timeout, or you can sit at home, drink a beer, and shout "**** YOU, AGGIES!" at your tv.

I'll admit, I didn't get to go to any of the games this season. I blame that on my ridiculous schedule this year, though, not a lack of willingness. But for a lot of people, they may just think they can have a better time watching the game at The Vista, or Al's, or Coach's, or their house.

Obviously there are more OU b-ball fans than post on this board but I bet that % is a lot higher than it is in football. It is pretty apparent that we all care but I would bet that the reaction of a large amount, maybe even a majority of Sooner fans is a collectively yawn regarding basketball. That includes women's as well.

When the team has been real sucessful and gone deep in the tourney there are "enough" fans to support the team but generally we are interested more in spring football.

None of this means we CAN'T have a successful team and get a good coach but I do think as a whole our fan hoop support pretty much sucks. If we won the NC next year it would be 07-08 before our fans started showing up.

okienole3
3/30/2006, 12:58 PM
If your concern is fans, then bring in a guy that plays a more exciting brand of b-ball. OU b-ball fans are bad, but not as bad as some let on. I think part of the problem is ticketing. Another part of the problem is Lloyd Noble. The fans show up for the big games. Maybe play more big games in out of conference rather than FAMU, Binghampton, et. al. Or, move those games to the field house.

I don't know if Joe C. has made a bad hire. The Gene Stephenson hire was a knockout, for him to lure him from his longtime job here was great. How could he have known what a headcase he was?

However, Joe C. has made OU kind of feel like a professional atmosphere. All those damn promotions, music instead of the band after big runs in basketball, signs being taken away, those ponies, Marc Heitz Kid Captain/Ballboy of the Game, and the AE fan cam suck. The only thing KU did at Allen Fieldhouse that was modern was playing the Tommy Boy "That was awesome!" clip after they finally took the lead over us. They also had a sweet intro video, something we don't have.

Joe's favorite sports is basketball. He probably follows it more then anyone.

I think he did hire both gymnastics coaches. And we're doing okay there. I think we've won national championships in womens. I don't know about men's gymnastics but I do know that we have a guy that may be in the olympics in Jonathan Horton. Outside of that I have no real knowledge of the gymnastics teams. I don't know anything about the golf program either. Nor do I care about any of em that much.

Baseball is an unproven hire right now. It looks good so far, but we'll have to wait a while to see if the hire was good or bad.

Then why has it become consistently less fun each year since I've been at OU (since 1999) to go to basketball games? And I'm not talking about the on-court product, I'm talking about the band, half-time, student chants, etc.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I have to say, OU has got to have the gayest azz promotions in the entire freakin' world! And Joe C. and the other coaches secruity has got to be the biggest freaking JOKE I've ever seen at a major university.

Now I know it isn't popular with a lot of posters on this board, but I am a mid-20's-year-old and when I was about 11, my dad started taking me to Owen Field for games when he finally got his season tickets. When we went, I wanted to get some autographs afterwards and I have been doing it since and in a year I will start taking my son with me and do the same thing. Some people like to fish or hunt or look at porn, I happen to like to get autographs of the football team.

Having said that, if you have paid any attention at all to how things are run at OU, its gotten a little different to say in the least. If you stay and get a players autograph today, they question you like a freakin' police officer and no, not just older guys like me. Even the kids. They want to make sure you're not going to sell it on ebay or something like that and I think this is a direct trickle-down affect from Joe C. and then on to Stoops and then on to the players. Joe has an ego as does Bob and so on just like any coach. I hate to break thenews to them, but their autographs don't sell for that much anyway. But I can remember things being a lot more relaxed in days past, as can my uncles that went when the King was at OU. We have so many secruity guards it's unbelievable. I promise you Joe and Bob, no Sooner fan is going to hurt any of the coaches or players. Sometimes, we might just like to take a picture with you or shake your hand and congradulate you, like normal people do....

OU isn't just the most fan-friendlyiest place. And why should they be guys? OU is a university that make some serious CA$$$H every year. And they're going to get their coin and then some every year no matter what becasue we have a HUGE fan base. OU is in fact a business, like it or not, so yeah, they're going to have the corny-*** promos and stupid music because they want to put up a front that they are this "awesome, family-type atmosphere" university unlike any others...which I agree with, but my God...when our football team is coming out to Phil Collins "I Can Feel It Comin' In The Air Tonight"??????????(2005 KSU game) Is that not the most gayest, stupidest, freakin' thing ever? Play some AC/DC or something that will get the fans pumped up, not sitting there looking around to see if any of the visitors are looking at us going, "Man, I feel sorry for you guys."-which a Jayhawk said to me 2 years ago when we had that GAY video for the women's b-ball team.

Now, don't go negging me because you think it's dumb to collect autographs or that I said somehting against Bob or Joe. I love OU just as much as any of you on this board, but the last time I posted something like this, the mods came after me like sentinel's in the Matrix.
