No. 74 Oklahoma 29 ... Ohio State 28, September 24, 1977
At the time: It was one of the biggest non-conference games ever as No. 3 Oklahoma traveled to Columbus to face No. 4 Ohio State. The Sooners were 2-0 after surviving in a 25-23 win over Vanderbilt before pummeling Utah 62-24. Led by head coach Woody Hayes, the Buckeyes beat Miami and Minnesota by a combined score of 48-7 for a 2-0 start.
The setup: Thomas Lott, playing on an injured leg and before getting knocked out with a sprained ankle, ran the OU wishbone to a 20-0 lead with touchdown runs from Elvis Peacock and Billy Sims. OSU came back with 28 straight points highlighted by a touchdown catch from TE Jimmy Moore off a deflected pass. OU was able to convert a late OSU fumble into a Peacock touchdown with 1:29 to play, but he was unable to get in for the two point conversion keeping the Buckeyes ahead 28-26.
The ending: Oklahoma had to go for the onside kick. Uwe Von Schamann's kick bounced by the Buckeyes and in the hands of OU's Mike Babb at the 50. Backup Sooner QB Dean Blevins moved the offense to the Buckeye 24 with six seconds to play giving Von Schamann a shot at the win with a 41-yard field goal. During a timeout called by Ohio State, Von Schamann egged on the crowd trying to rally the Buckeye defense to block the kick. He nailed it for the 29-28 win.
How they ended up: Ohio State bounced back to win seven straight games, but it didn't beat anyone of note, before losing 14-6 to Michigan and 35-6 to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl to finish 9-3. The Sooners beat Kansas the following week before losing 13-6 to Texas. Even with the loss, they were still in the hunt for the national title ending the regular season 10-1 ranked No. 2 behind the Longhorns. Texas lost to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl opening the door for the Sooners to win the national title, but Lou Holtz's Arkansas team beat OU 31-6 in the Orange Bowl.

My roomie and I sat just under the deck in the OSU section for that game. Two of my high school cheerleaders were cheerleaders for OU at the time. As exciting as the game was it only tied for the most exciting thing that happened in Columbus that weekend.

Everything in the top 25 will be from the ESPN generation, with a few hype games thrown in to make them look credible.

OU/A&M 2000?

TMarsh's INT was with quite a bit of time left.

Here's a great ending.

OU/Tx 2001. Yes the game was over already. Texas wasn't gonna go 99 yards on us after having about that many yards all game. But that play near the end of the game was just so memorable.

I was born in Columbus OH and lived in OH till I was 27. Only time In my life I ever wanted Ohio State to lose, and was happy as a pig in mud that they did. I must be getting old and my memory going bad, because I keep thinking that FG was 50+ yds. Oh well, it was good.

OU-Neb 86: Keith's miracle catch and Tim's last second kick. Sooners score 10 points in the last 1:45 (IIRC) to win 20-17.

OU-TX 90: Tim's little brother, R.D., misses a 48ydr (IIRC) as time expires...bad guys win 14-13 (no real national significance though).

OU-Mizzou 75: Little Joe saves a NC...OU wins by 1 on a two point conversion leap to the pylon in Columbia.

OU-Neb 78: Billy's fumble at the 3 yd line w/ less than 2 minutes to go...OU got revenge in Miami but it cost the Sooners a sixth NC

we lose the game, but the move Billy makes on the bugeater LB on the fumble play in the backfield is crazy. that's my second most painful sports memory...but that hip move was incredible.

i grew up in Norman and after the Ohio State game in 77.....people were just driving around for hours honking their car horns and throwing beer cans out the windows. and yelling. just yelling. i've never seen anything like it. for hours.

i lived in Norman for 3 NC's and I've never seen anything like that. it was beautiful.

Davis's kick...Missouri has the absolute worst luck of any program I can think of when they're at home (obviously excluding Oklahoma St.).

That game was the same day as 30-7 in Norman IIRC....I hated Frosty up until that day...he proved he was a winner.

Anybody else remember this little gem? I'm betting Guy didn't sleep for a month.

"The Wildcats had already drenched coach Guy Morriss with water
from a cooler before LSU scored."

No. 20 USC 28 ... Oklahoma 24, September 26, 1981
At the time: It was No. 1 vs. No. 1 as Oklahoma, with a 37-20 win over Wyoming, was 1-0 ranked tops in the AP poll vs. 2-0 USC (http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Almanac/Top_100_Finishes/100_Best_College_Football_Finishes_20_11.htm#), with an impressive 43-7 win over Tennessee and a 21-0 victory over Indiana, holding the top spot in the UPI poll.
The setup: Oklahoma's wishbone was running the ball at will, but drive after drive after drive was stopped by fumbles as the offense put it on the turf ten times and losing five. Even so, OU was able to take a 24-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Equally difficult to stop was USC RB Marcus Allen who finished with 208 yards and two touchdowns. His second, a three-yard score, got the Trojans to within three with over six minutes left to play. OU's running game, which finished with 307 yards, was looking to go on a long drive to run out the clock, but USC's defense was able to come up with a stop giving the ball back to the offense with 4:28 left. While the running game was moving the ball, it was taking up too much time forcing the Trojans to use QB John Mazur to start throwing.
The ending: Mazur made the plays he had to finding Jeff Simmons for 26 yards and running for a first down on 4th and one before finding Malcom Moore for a 15-yard pass with :17 to play. From the seven, Mazur misfired to Allen on first down, and then had a wide-open Allen in the end zone on second down. However, USC TE Fred Cornwell thought the pass was for him and tipped it away with nine seconds to play. Instead of going for the tie, USC head coach John Robinson called the same play that had sprung Allen open before. It didn't work as Mazur was forced to scramble just as Cornwell was able to break free in the back left corner of the end zone. Mazur put his throw on the money for the touchdown with two-seconds to play and a 28-24 lead. OU made the final kickoff interesting as Buster Rhymes got out to the 40 before being stopped.
How they ended up: Oklahoma didn't exactly come back roaring tying Iowa State 7-7 and losing 34-14 to Texas before going on a four-game winning streak. The Sooners ended the year with a 40-14 Sun Bowl win over Houston to finish 7-4-1 and 14th in the UPI poll and 20th in the AP. USC started the season winning eight of its first nine games only losing 13-10 to Arizona. A 26-10 loss to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl closed out a 9-3 campaign finishing 13th in the UPI poll and 14th in the AP.

I'm a little disappointed. That was the only other one that made it. A lot of games, though. And many of you were wrong. Some of you were right. Cal-Stanford was Number 1.

Top 5:

1. Cal-Stanford, 1982
2. BC-Miami, 1984
3. BYU-SMU, 1980
4. USC-ND, 2005
5. UGA-UF, 1980
