If any of you can offer input here, I'd appreciate it.

Slickwife's new job, should she get it, will be in downtown Dallas.
Ross Avenue, I believe.

How long of a commute will that be from the suburbs north of Dallas?

Depends exactly "where" north. Shortest is realistically probably 45 minutes.

About 15 minutes, if she leaves at 4:30AM and comes home at 9PM.

If she can work off hours, like start at 7:00 am and get off earlier, she may be abel to GET there in 30-45 minutes. Chances are the drive home is always going to be bad. Just some days worse than others.

Mrs. Howzit works downtown and we live in Flower Mound. The thing that saves her is that she is contract and doesn't leave for work until about 8:45 am and leaves to come home about 3:00 pm. Great gig if you can get it. :D

Of course she also worked at home last night until 1:30 am...

I have not been on 75 during rush hour in a while. Is it as bad as it was before they built the High 5?

The Tollway is about 45 during rush hour, although it can be 30 minutes if you get lucky or 60 minutes if you get unlucky. I used to work the phones from my car so I made it productive time.

Oh, and I should say that you do get used to it, kind of.

SlickDawg,

You could always look for housing in Oak Cliff...

75 during rush hour is an ever loving f-ing nightmare from hell.
Somehow every damn time I drive home I end up hitting that nasty *** I-35N E /US-75 rush hour traffic. It's a nightmare and it doesn't let up until you get out of the metroplex.

I live in Farmers Branch and work in Carrollton, so I go against traffic both ways. That probably doesn't help you much, but it's pretty sweet for me. :D

The Dart is a pretty good option. I have heard good things about it.

I can't comment about FART.

Most of North Dallas is overpriced and overpopulated, unless you want to live halfway to Oklahoma. Take a look at the Cedar Hill/De Soto area. There's a wide range of housing, and retail is booming, particularly in Cedar Hill. Plus, they have hills.

My son-in-law lives in Frisco and works in Plano, about a 30-min drive during rush. He lives a little early in the morning and comes home about 6:00 to avoid the rush, 15-20 min drive.

Why do you hate Slickdawg?

I live in the northern burbs. We like it - you get what you pay for in the areas.
I have friends in Cedar Hill who hate our area and the traffic. Guess what? They now have the same problem.

DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILDREN IN DALLAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS! Ever.

You're really going to have to check out things for yourself; there are too many preconceived notions here for you to get an informed opinion. Garland has more than 200,000 people. It's going to have good areas and bad areas. Ditto for other mega-suburbs like Mesquite, Richardson, Carrolton, Arlington, and Grand Prairie, and Plano (okay--there might not be any "bad" areas in Plano). People who live north think everything south of I-30 is like South Central LA. You're probably going to find the same prejudices in local realtors, too, so do your own research.
