View Full Version : Move to Dallas?

We're seriously considering it. Slickwife has a very good opportunity in
downtown Dallas.

As for me, computer geek, ahem, IT jobs are all over the place, especially just north of the Dallas area. Hopefully all of this will work out.

Do it. I moved from OKC to McKinney a year ago and my salary has increased by 75%.

Higher salaries. Equal cost of living.

Unfortunately, it's a no-brainer, especially for IT folks.

I hated dallas when I lived down there. I did make better money, but the trade off was the quality of life issue. I wanted a better quality of life and took the money hit, and moved back up to OKC.

Dallas is way too crowded. Nobody goes there anymore.

Yeah, renting is a brilliant idea for anyone making more than 50K.

I can't imagine how much the rent would be in that area. The only reason I rent right now is because I can't beat the deal I got and I am single.

Biggest pain with Dallas is the traffic. Cost of living is no more than OKC, or at least very close. Property taxes are higher, but there is no state income tax.

2 1/5 hours from my doorstep to Norman...not bad.

Well guys, you gotta look at it this way.

The quality of life was dramatically altered here because of Katrina.

Most of the things we take for granted are gone - dining, entertainment,
shopping. It is going to be a long time for this area to recover.
That said, I can tough it out, no big deal. It sucks that there is only
ONE GROCERY STORE OPEN in Hancock County, MS, but that's
part of it.

We both have masters degrees, slickwife in environmental engineering,
mine in MIS. Opportunities are not abundant down here, especially these days. Hopefully, things will pan out for us.

Maybe so but how many people are going to be traveling to your doorstep?

Idiot.

It must of changed quite a bit since I lived in Plano. A nice apartment down there was 800+ if you were renting a 1 bedroom apt(This was about 7-8 years ago).

Regarding I.T. jobs in the Dallas metro, I keep hearing from people down there that the telco industry growth tapered off, along with it the I.T. job market has tapered too, to the point that there's more I.T. people than jobs in some sectors. I know for a fact there were numerous mass-layoffs starting a few years ago, hopefully that's not still going on.

Any truth to that, or are these people just doing what they can to keep the market from being over-saturated with I.T. peeps? ;)

I couldn't tell you about renting, and I don't really know about Plano. What i do know is that the home I bought in Flower Mound would probably be more expensive in Edmond. And, yes, I understand Edmond is an expensive area of the OKC metro area, but in general FM prices are comparable to the OKC metro area.

I guess my whole point, as crawfish said, is that the relationship for cost of living to salary is MUCH higher in Dallas than in Oklahoma. At least for my job. If it were not, I would be in Oklahoma.

If you decide to come here, float me your resume. We get a pretty decent referral fee for IT folks. Speaking of which, they owe me one.

Right, because everyone making over 50K have the same financial, personal, and career situation that allows them to purchase a house.

Apparently they don't in Oklahoma, because that's the justification for the supermajority requirement for raising property taxes.
