I understand why the accoustics are different for an unimcumbered flatulation in a damp closed in environment.

I just don't get the exponential increase in stink.

Hot water vapor rises rapidly in the shower forming a mini convective up lift that draws the fart from yer *** to your nose at a much more accelerated rate than under normal adiabatic conditions. Thus, the fart has had less time to propagate into the air and it's stenchy-goodness is relatively fresher.:D

I believe that I can prove that water has something to do with it.

By farting under the same set of circumstances, minus the water, I think there will be a significant decrease in the olfactory offense.

No, but I bet that was the first time anybody ran a fart through a mass spectrometer...on TV, anyway. They determined that you cannot suffocate yourself by farting too much in an enclosed area, and lighting a match does ameloriate one of the more objectionable components of a fart.

Isn't it because the shower space is nearly saturated with water vapor (super-high humidity) and gas doesn't mix with water, so your gas is squeezed into the tiny air spaces between all those water molecules and thus stays more concentrated than your every day, run-of-the-mill, walking down the hallway fart by the time it reaches your nose??

It would be the exact opposite. The fart content of a given parcel of air (i.e. a breathful) will be lower because the water vapor content is higher.

MDKlatt, I get the fact that you'd be getting more water molecules when you inhaled, and less air (odor) -- but would that be enough dampen or offset the super-concentrated fart odor? Maybe with the olfactory, it's more about quality (heh) than quantity.

Yes this would be true for any given parcel of air. However, in this case both the fart and water vapor have displaced the standard air mixture. Leaving one standing in the shower smelling farts as if they were funneled directly to their nostrils.

First of all, the way I understand the sense of smell it's all about the number of molecules that reach your smell receptors, so fewer molecules in a breath means less smell.

The fart molecules within the air sample would be well-mixed with the water vapor and other gasses; no matter how small you make your sample, the ratio of fart to saturated air would be the same. There would be no "fart pockets", so to speak.

H2O, in the form of water vapor, easily attaches to methane molecules by the chlorine atom, or the sulfur released from bacteria, making the foul smell more readily attach to the nostril lining, subsequently sustaining the odor longer than in a dry climate.

*cough* bull**** *cough*

There is no chlorine atom in a methane molecule, and pure methane is odorless.

No, but I also didn't say that the non-existent chlorine atom in an odorless methane molecule bonds to a water molecule (or vice versa), thus prolonging the fart smell in the nasal passages. If half of that Answerbag answer is bunk, I going to be suspicious of the rest of it.

I'm not sure they're actually reacting, maybe it's a slight attraction due to their polarity and/or ionic nature?

It's because of the natural reverb effect that showers have, which is why singing in the shower is almost as popular as farting in the shower. Actually, if you could do both at once, you'd probably have a hit. Assuming, of course, that the farts were in time with the rhythm of the song. If anyone cares to try this, I would suggest you attempt "Wind Beneath My Wings".

I have a theory.

1 - you're wearing no clothes, so the flatulence is not being filtered whatsoever by any material.

2 - your nose is more open due to the hot water. i bet if you broke wind in a cold shower it wouldn't be so stenchy.

sanantoniosooner
11/14/2006, 09:12 AM
Water temperature may contribute, but for this reason IMO. The hot showers produce more water vapor in the air. This seems to be a part of the equation.

That and cold showers make me clench.

I still think it has something to do with the chlorine in the tap water. I've never tested this theory while in a lake or river, but there's a reason every tub/shower fart smells the same. It's like the great fart equalizer that makes all your farts communist.

william_brasky
11/14/2006, 10:21 AM
I found this:

Why do farts smell so much worse in a shower than anywhere else?

There are several factors. First of all, a shower is a small, enclosed space, so the fart gas is more concentrated, and the high turbidity of the air in the shower circulates the gas through the space effectively. Secondly, the high humidity and high temperature conditions in the shower enhance a person's sense of smell and taste. The farts don't actually smell worse, it's just that we can smell them better than usual.
Similar conditions prevail in the bathtub.
