They're dropping like flies at the ranch. This little guy was laid to rest alongside Shorty last night. We haven't had an animal die in over two years, and now two in the last couple days.

I'm going elk hunting in September. So there'll be elk chili.

And Shorty was about $2,500. Of course he's a horse, and horses continue to cost big $$ as long as they live, and there's never a payday that comes from a horse, so in reality, I'm saving money now that he's muerto.

The calf, on the other hand, lost/cost us $$. With the current price of beef, about $700.

Some hillbillies might, but when they die of disease, it's not a real good idea.

That's one of the reasons the sale barns won't take "downer" cattle anymore. A downer is one that cannot walk on it's own. Back in the day, they used to just drag them across the scales and sell them. Now, if they're down, they won't accept them.

And cattle are born to be butchered, so there's nothing gross about it. After you spend some time around them, you come to the realization that anything that stupid deserves to get eaten.

Sheep are by far stupider than cattle, and sheep die much more often for no apparent reason.

You laugh, but until you have been around them, you don't realize just how stupid they are. There is a reason that the old lead cows are worth a bunch of money. When hearding them, make sure and get the old lead cow in front. Where one cow goes, the rest follow.

I've seen cattle that won't go through a 30' opening in a fence that is right in front of them. However, if you aren't trying to heard them, they will go through a 1.5' wide opening where you don't want them to go. And then usually they will walk out on the road and stand and look at oncoming traffic. There may be dumber animals on earth, but not many.

There isn't the soul of a evil little girl trapped in a well out on the Ponderosa, is there?

I hear she flips out at times and likes to kill animals and such...
