“South Park” — Chef or no Chef?
By Diane Holloway | Tuesday, March 21, 2006, 10:21 AM
So, really, who’s zooming whom in this “South Park” controversy?

Did Isaac Hayes, who has voiced the libidinous Chef since the foul-mouthed cable comedy’s debut in 1997, really quit the show last week because he was offended by a lampoon of his personal religion, Scientology?

Or did the Church of Scientology stir things up without the participation of Hayes, who has been recovering from a mid-January stroke?

Or did Comedy Central concoct the whole mess to spark ratings for the 10th season debut of “South Park” on Wednesday?

‘Tis a confusing quagmire, which, no matter who you blame, is incredibly tasteless … But then so is “South Park.” Funny as all get-out, but tasteless.

To briefly recap: Last week a statement was released, allegedly from Hayes, condemning Comedy Central and “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker for making fun of Scientology in an episode, originally shown in November, depicting Scientologist Tom Cruise in a closet and Stan being dubbed the new savior of the faith. Hayes, or someone claiming to be Hayes, said Hayes had left the show.

Last week Comedy Central pulled a scheduled rerun of the episode, amid rumors that Cruise had threatened the cable network if it didn’t.

But this week reports have surfaced claiming that Hayes had nothing to do with the statement attributed to him.

Tomorrow night’s season opener, titled “Chef Returns,” may or may not feature the voice of Hayes. A Comedy Central spokesman would not comment — other than to confirm that Hayes is officially gone. The spokesman also declined to say whether Chef will be an ongoing character on the show.

In this Wednesday’s show, Chef returns to the Colorado town of South Park, but the foul-mouthed kids (Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman) notice “something different,” according to Comedy Central. When Chef finds himself in trouble, on account of this “something different,” the kids help him out.

Are Stone and Parker manipulating all of this for publicity? Of course. But it’s completely murky as to whether Hayes, the Church of Scientology, Comedy Central or Stone and Parker started the controversy rolling.
