1. Take a nail, drive it through a small piece of wood so that it sticks out the other side.
2. Bury it nail point up in the ground so that there are a few inches between the surface and the tip of the nail.
3. Place a shotgun shell face up on the nail so that the point of the nail touches where the hammer should strike.
4. Finish burying the whole contraption.
5. ...
6. Profit!
