Tubbs steps down as Lamar coach, will remain AD

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Lamar coach Billy Tubbs announced Monday that he is stepping down after three seasons but will continue to be the athletic director at his alma mater.

Tubbs returned to the school in May 2002 and compiled a 46-43 record over three seasons, including 17-14 this season. His overall record with the Cardinals is 121-89, which includes a four-year stint in the '70s.
Tubbs said in a statement that he's confident the basketball program at the Southland Conference school will continue to move forward.

"This will allow me to get back to doing the job [athletic director] I came back to Lamar to do in the first place," he said.

Tubbs was persuaded to return to his former school after announcing his retirement from TCU, where he coached eight seasons. Tubbs also spent 14 years at Oklahoma, building the Sooners to a national basketball power.
Tubbs is 641-340 over his 31-year coaching career, leading teams to the NCAA Tournament 12 times. He has six National Invitation Tournament appearances, eight conference championships, three conference tournament championships and 18 20-win seasons.
