It has 5 strings, in case you didn't notice.

I decided to go with this 5 string over a used 4 string Washburn.

Howzit

Well what the heck are you going to do with that extra string?

1stTimeCaller

first thing I'm gonna do is buy a new string. I broke the C string trying to tune it. As of now I just have the regular 4. Then I'm gonna rock out with my **** out.

but it'll probably end up on the wall like my mandolin and fiddle

C? I ovbiously had incorrect ideas about bass tunings, how is a bass tuned?

From winikpedia:
The standard design electric bass has four strings, tuned E, A, D, G (with the fundamental frequency of the E string set at 41.3 Hz, the same as the lowest string on the double bass). Modern variants include:

Five strings (normally B, E, A, D, G but sometimes E, A, D, G, C) Six strings (B, E, A, D, G, C or B, E, A, D, G, B—although E, A, D, G, B, E has also been used). Six string basses are not very popular, but some noted bass players do use them, such as New Order's Peter Hook and Dream Theater's John Myung. Basses with seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven and even twelve (untripled) strings are also available (see also extended-range bass).

Ok, it does match a guitar tuning if you go with the B, I have never heard of using a C.

1stTimeCaller

well, that's what the guy at Guitar Center told me to tune it to but the tuner I have didn't know that and boy was I cranking down on that bad boy and SNAP.

Should I re-tune it to BEADG when I get my new string?

Howzit
3/20/2006, 01:40 PM
Heck if I know, I'm a geetar picker. A standard guitar tuning is EADGBE.

<edit> Oh, I think you put the B on the wrong end. Don't do that.

1stTimeCaller

Makes sense now. I think I'll go with EADGB. The tuner was telling me that I was at B then B sharp then nothing and I'm still cranking for C and then blammo.

I'll chalk that one up to user error.
